I just finished installing the Stebel Nautilus Compact. Here is a short synopsis of my install.

The package includes the horn unit and a 30 amp relay. I'm not great with electrical stuff but the wiring was not too difficult. After one mix up I had everything sorted.

I mounted the relay to one of the screws that holds the undertray to the subframe.

Wire splices were used to tap into the stock horn wires to trigger the new relay from the horn button. I disconnected the wires from the stock horn and pulled them back to the battery area. This is where I had originally screwed up. I thought that the S3 had a hot lead to the horn button. Apparently it has a ground lead.

The relay and horn is wired like this:
The 12v in terminal (marked 30) runs to the positive pole in the battery through a 20 amp fuse
The ground terminal (marked 85) is wire spliced into the purple/black wire that originally went to the factory horn
The trigger terminal (marked 86) is wire spliced into the orange green wire that originally went to the factory horn
The 12v out terminal (marked 87) is run to the positive side of the horn unit
The negative side of the horn unit is run directly to the motorcycles electrical ground.

My next goal was to figure out where to install the horn. I originally wanted to install in on the back of the battery box above the swingarm pivot. There wasn't enough room there so I decided to place it near the front sprocket cover.

I made up a bracket to attach to the top two screws of the sprocket cover. I used 1/16" steel cut on a band saw and then fished on a bench grinder.

I painted the bracket and installed it onto the horn unit. I used an M8x35 screw, nylock nut and 4 washers as spacers. It needed to be spaced so it wouldn't rest against the sprocket cover.

Here is the finished product. It fits into the small void pretty well.

*ETA* I removed the original sound file links. They got screwed up somehow.

Follow the link farther down in this thread to hear the new horn.

ROFL!!! :roflmoa2:
I have a surround sound system on this computer and I just downloaded and listened to the sound file of the Nautilus. My dog just about jumped out of his hide, and he is still standing there panting as I type this!! I hope that horn has a similar effect on the mindless cagers on the street!

Good luck!

Hey 02s3.

I just noticed you used those little blue "Fold-over" wire splices.

I highly recommend you remove them and replace them with good soldered connections.

In my opinion these "Fold-over" splices should be illegal. I can't tell you how many times as a professional mechanic I've spent hours tracing an electrical fault down to one of these things. If you look inside them, the way they work is to actually cut the wire in the process of splicing. This can, and often does, lead to intermittent contact. Particularly if they get wet.

Soldered connections are 100% secure. They take longer, but are really worth it. It's actually easy, so I recommend learning how. Use shrink tubing to cover the joints.

How to solder wires

If anybody is interested in a tutorial on soldering wire joints and connectors in motorcycle wiring, let me know. The above link is more applicable to electronics.

HiVel-

Did you get your Stebel mounted? I have an 06 S3, and was wondering how the install went on yours, and how different it was from the 02 install...
