Has anyone else had problems starting thier bike after it's been sitting in the sun for a few hours? What is the problem and can it be fixed? It's almost like it's vaporising.....

I even read an article in one of the Aussie mags recently that said the 05 / 06 still has the problem of not wanting to start after sitting in the sun!

I haven't had this problem, and I haven't heard of anyone having this problem. But I believe you. With Fuel Injection I doubt very much it's vapor locking or vaporizing (or a similar problem.)

A couple of thoughts though. Most fuel injection systems have an Intake Air Temperature Sensor that just measures the air temperature in the airbox and adjusts the fuel/air mixture. It's possible that your bike has a bad one. Your dealer should be able to spot this by hooking it up to their analyzer.

There are a few other places where a sensor or another electronic component is sensitive to heat. Things with coils of wire in them like Ignition Coils, fuel injectors, and some sensors can have the wire lengthen when they warm up. This can cause intermittent electrical shorts that cause aggravating problems. This can be difficult to diagnose at your dealer, and frustrating for everyone involved!

I expect it's either the Intake Air Temperature Sensor, or possibly a bad Throttle Position Sensor. It could also be a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor. All of these can probably be sorted out by your dealership or mechanic.

Or you could move up here where the sun rarely shines and solve the whole problem.

Mine is also being a PITA to start, I had the TOR's installed and re-mapped, I don't think my mechanics have checked for updates on the mapping.

If anyone has any hard info on updated maps so I can talk to these.... God like mechanics who have this - "I know everything ego" and do-not listen, they tell me..." that is the nature of the Speed triple"..... I think that 20 revolutions to start is excessive, especially when leaving humbled from a bike meet when a guy who loved the looks of the bike, told me to get a Harley. it didn't start that bad when it was stock.

Hi Caroline!

My S3 is a pain to start when it sits around 5 days or longer. I hope they come up with a new map soon.

Take Care!

Ok that makes sense about the sensors!!!! It's just about
due for the next service - will have to get on to them and
make sure it's all sorted out! Never had a problem if it sits
overnight or anything as long as it's not in the sun.......
Did put a new can on it BUT it had happened prior to that with the genuine one too!

Thanks anyway guys

hi Caroline, living in australia as well (adelaide) and similar climate have no problems starting mine. Its an 04 completely stock and always starts instantly. Getting a high pipe soon, just hope it doesnt stuff up the reliabillity ! Sorry cant help you ,maybe injectors need cleaning or sensor problem. One thing i have learnt though is never start the engine and then stop it before reaching operating temperature as this will foul the plugs real quick. cheers, steve
