2003 Speedie clutch replacement

Hi Guys,

My clutch cable needs replacing, its stretched and not much adjustment left, is it possible to replace the clutch cable without taking the tank off? , looking at how its routed it goes from the lever down past the headstock through the left side of the frame across the middle/engine out the right side to the clutch cover. If someone could confirm the clutch cable routing for a 03 Speedie or even a photo that would be great.

Many thanks

Regards

Buy a cable for an '07 and you can replace it W/O removing the tank.
Different routing than the original.

Thanks PhilM for the reply,

Unfortunately the 955i clutch cable is already ordered, so this is the first time I'll have to take the tank off ( dreading touching those fuel line fittings)since i purchased the bike, I was hoping to leave the tank on.

The service manual doesnt mention taking the tank off but just looking at the bike and the cable routing it might be easier, anyone?

I've done it on cars, maybe it'll work for you on the bike. You may try and just feed it where it needs to go, and if you need a little help with that, use a wire coat hangar bent however you need attached to it with a string or something - kinda like you're sewing. It's odd and ghetto, but sometimes it does the trick if you really don't want to remove things. And BTW, it sounds obvious, but try not to scratch the hell out of your bike doing it.

I believe you can thread the cable where it needs to go by taking off the black side panels and removing the front and rear mounting bolts from the tank. Prop the tank up with a piece of wood, etc.
This should allow you to raise or tilt the tank enough to install the cable without removing the fuel lines or electrical connectors.
You could cut the metal curve off the bottom of the old cable and tape the clutch lever end of the new cable to it and feed it thru under the tank.

Bite the bullet and learn how to take your tank off - you will need to at some point for even simple maintenance like air filter replacement (consider doing that too while you're in there!)
It's really not that onerous - just follow the directions, use care and common sense and there is no reason you should have any mishap. Near empty tank is MUCH easier to handle, so consider that in advance (siphon if necessary)

Remove side access panels
Remove seat - place a blanket/pad across the subframe where seat previously occupied (creates intermediate resting spot for tank as you remove)
Disconnect the main fuel disconnects, the fuel pump power and the fuel level sensor connector* (under bottom of tank - it might be easier to access/remove after you lift tank out for most part - just don't forget it!!!!!) and the two drain hoses on the left side - be sure to identify which hose goes where for both the drains and the main lines.
Remove the bolts and lift out the tank - be cautious of not banging the female fuel fittings off frame as you lift out tank - again, near empty tank is going to create much less opportunity for damage. Reminder again that if you did not get the level sensor initially then get it now as you lift the tank partially out (helper handy here!)

*You can actually access that connector from left side if you go in just above the sprocket cover.

Thanks DEcosse,

I checked the fuel fittings are they are all metal male and female thankyou previous owner...however I was hoping someone could confirm that the correct clutch cable part# is T2040387 for a 03 Speedie? I have been given T2040525.

Many thanks

Thanks to everyone for the advice

New cable has been installed and adjusted as per service manual procedure, one question I do have is that I have noticed that the
clutch engages now closer to the end of the clutch lever travel (as you release the lever), can this be adjusted so it engages closer to the bar? do I add a little more freeplay or take someout? if this normal outcome for correct adjustment let me know.
