Shipping a Bike?

Folks,

I'm still S3 shopping and I've got it down to a couple of candidates.

One of them is a couple hundred miles away in another state. I do not believe the bike is tagged and inspected (trying to find out if it is) so it wouldn't be wise for me to head up there and ride it home without those credentials.

Thus, I'd be looking at shipping it. Call it 250 miles down the east coast.

I've never used a shipper for a remote transaction like this before. How much does it cost? How do things get handled? Slightly nervous about this idea.

Quite a few companies out there so it's definitely a good idea to shop around and find any reviews. Costs range anywhere from $300-$600 depending on distance, residential drop off/pick up etc

depending on the state (i dunno the laws where you are), you *should* be able to get a temp 3-day registration online and print it out. then hop a bus or whatever for $50 with some food and your riding gear. call your ins co ahead and get the policy set-up (to save time later), then call back once ya have title in-hand and have them start the policy and e-mail (or maybe even fax, if you're really worried bout gettin pulled-over) your proof of ins paper to the closest Kinko's or whatever... enjoy the bonding ride home on your new S3!

...shipping is slow. it costs a fortune. they damage stuff. you'll have to buy it sight-unseen, and if there's new damage, the shipping co and seller will blame each-other.

i've bought 3 bikes and rode em home from only 140mi to 820mi...SO MUCH FUN ...i'd only ship if the bike was already in my possession and i couldn't replace it if i moved overseas.

whatever ya decide...yay new S3!

Although I did buy the bike sight unseen, the bike was in mint condition (thankfully). Not sure I would do it again, although it did work for me.

I used uship.com (great site) to find a shipper that only does bikes. I ended up using Bullet Transport.

Very professional, only bikes shipped. He can be trusted as he'll ship $20,000 choppers etc. He knows what good shipping is.

I would request a bid from him on uship.

I'd definitely ship a bike from coast to coast, but I'm not sure if shipping would be cost effective for that distance. I'd definitely ride it. If not, 250 miles seems like it's within the 'courtesy range' to ask a friend with a pickup truck to drive it. Or maybe get a U-haul and a $30 pack of ratcheting cargo straps....

Yeah, I've been thinking about it. Shipping would be roughly 10% of the purchase price.

The seller hasn't been responding to my inquiries about things, and it doesn't give me a particularly good feeling. My instincts with this one are ringing alarm bells, so I may just wait. It's just that the price seems to be right and it looks like a nice bike - but I just can't get a sense that the seller is straight up.

There's still that 06 I'm looking at. It's still available...gonna go check it out again on Tuesday...

I had my D12 shipped from Dallas Texas to Calais Maine by Keyboard MC. shipping out of Kentucky. They are excellent, no problems at all. Cost me 6 bills, but I couldn't even get there for that.

I have also used Uship.com to send a bike from VA to Florida... I'll see if I can find the info for the guy I used. One man operation thing, wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

Well, it looks like the bike has sold, and it went for more than I would have paid for it (I think) so no worries there.

And I don't have access to the classifieds yet, unfortunately. Need a few more posts under my belt. Trying to be a good citizen and all so I'll get there soon enough.
