I made a tool for removing the top nut. I used a 1" socket and cut it up leaving 2 "pins" to engage the holes in the top nut. Using this type of tool will allow you to properly torque the nut (headbearing will loosen if top nut is not torqued properly).
The first time I installed clip-ons I dropped the fork legs to avoid removing the top nut. The top nut route is easier. You'll have to unweight the front end to reinstall the top nut. I did this by putting the bike on the paddock stand and raising the front by placing a floor jack under the front of the engine.
