I have searched high and low for a black helmet lock that will attach to one of my ~1" sub-frame tubes. The black Pro-Motion is only good up to 7/8's inch diameter tubes.
My goal is not to transport my helmet but to lock it when I am somewhere I feel is too sketchy to leave my helmet unattended.
There are chrome ones available that are sized for the larger frame members but that just will not do. I wish not to see it unless I really look for it!
I made one myself under the seat off one of the bolts that goes through the batter tray to the subframe I just used a little piece of 90 degree metal for a shelve and bolted it on works great slip the d rings through it and put the seat back on if you would like I could get some pics of it tomorrow
I made my own out of plastic coated 3/8" Aircraft cable with crimped loops at each end . I use a master lock lock the one below .
I just loop the cable around the handle bar between the risers and lock it in place till I need it .
I made the cable long enough to loop it through my jacket sleeve as well If I feel so inclined to leave it at my bike .
Heck I thought the 2011 had a helmet lock under the seat? ...the kind where you slide your D ring under and then lock the seat back down....I could be wrong.
I used one of those on my V-star . It was ok , but far from secure.
A new strap for a helmet is only 20$ tops , it takes 2 seconds with a knife to be gone with your 200-700$ lid.
Lock through the chin bar , there is no way to get the helmet off without total destruction.
helmet locks that lock the strap are next to useless. The 2011+ model does have hinges under the seat that fold out that you can use to hold the d-ring... but I would never trust my helmet there.
Yes, someone could cut the strap. But a cable and lock barely fits under the seat. Any type of lock works at least as a deterrent, right? Something is better than nothing. This one (I have not used it) looks compact and easy to carry: http://www.compacc.com/p/HelmetLok-Combination-Lock
Not as secure as a cable (which can be cut too, btw), but it's a good alternative to no lock at all, IMO.
Dude, you have a 2011 Speedy. Look under your seat. See those two silver hooks with the rubber on the end? Fold them out. When the seat is put back down they sit against the rear bodywork. Hook your d-ring around one of these.
edit: just went to the garage to make sure I'm not talking out of my ass here... I'm not. The hooks work. I'm still not about to leave my helmet like that though... I just carry mine with me.
I am aware of the tabs under the seat. I often travel with a dry bag strapped to the passenger seat and to use the underseat one it would require to be removed each time to pop the seat off.
If I am somewhere where I can take my helmet in I do it. But if I wanted to park and go off for a 2 hour hike up a trail or some such **** I just want to have something as a deterant.
The cable type lock thru thru the chin guard is always an option but I just do not want to give up my search for something that does not require me to carry anything extra--other than a key.
+1
Those are tie-down hooks. Good for securing a bag to the seat while riding, but worthless are far as locking anything to. You might as well hang your helmet on the handlebar. Or the passenger footpeg, which is what I do on occasion (won't fall as far if it gets knocked off...)
i know it's an old thread but i always like to give fellow riders solid info...
Tested out the sweet dual helmet lock I bought from Twisted Throttle, the Helmet Guardian. Mounts right behind the license plate with two security bolts (included) and two matching keys. Very good build quality overall, definitely worth the buy!
I use a Bully Lock Cobra. Coils itself, fits nicely under the seat on my '11 and I can run it through the sleeves on my jacket. Mine is several years old, and they are quite expensive now but well worth it.
I have one of those combination carabiner locks, with the optional coiled coated cable which I got for $25 at the bike show. It's pocket-sized, and I keep mine in a side pocket of the (Triumph) tail bag. The cable is really too long as it uncoils with the weight of the helmet, so I attach the lock to the frame, pass the cable the visor opening and hang the helmet on the right side foot rest. It's definitely better than nothing and works fine for a quick stop at a store, but I wouldn't trust it for more than an hour or two, as it's only as good as the pliers needed to clip the wire.
I was looking for something to secure my helmet as well, that combination thing looks perfect for it. Thanks
