I'm picking my S3 up soon (not damn soon enough, it was nice today, ahhhrg), and was wondering what the break in period is like on an S3.
How many miles? How slow do I have to ride, etc.?

Dude, it's total freakin' torture...

miles max rpm
---------------------------
0-100mi 3500 rpm
100-300mi 5000 rpm
300-600mi 6000 rpm
600-800mi 7000 rpm
800-1000mi 8000 rpm

remember to vary rpm and don't lug the engine. those first 100 miles are really tough :-D

You'll find out for sure when you finally pick up the bike and look in the owners manual, but from what I recall, you basically have to baby it around for the first 500 miles and keep the revs low, take it back in for a full synthetic oil change, then you're good to go...

I distinctly remember hitting 2K miles and realizing that the gearbox had developed a wonderful buttery texture...

so the shifting does get better then huh?

I don't really have a problem w/it now..as it has a very distinctive click to it....but if it only gets smoother...that's a good thing!!

And did anybody change their oil before their 500 mile service? I've briefly flirted w/the idea of changing it at 100.

Ya, I was told by my dealer yesterday, when i picked mine up that at the 500 miles service is when they switch to full synth, during that 500 mile break in for some reason they recomend half synth only.

and ya it was nice yesterday, i enjoyed my first few miles on the bike, but keeping her down in rpm's is hard...(in a good way)

I pick up my '04 SE S3 first week of May. It's on!!!

Kind of scary. A little more bike than I should have under me. Probably should have gone S4 but, that sinlge cross arm kinda gets me off.

The break in period isn't necessarily a bad thing in my world. It may be a blessing.

Last thing I rode with 2 wheels, that had a motor, was my KX 125 back in 1992.

Wish me luck.

Hi All,

Yesterday, got my first service (@ 400 miles). So, my dealer changed oil (to full synthetic) and had a good overall check.

I do agree the first 300 miles are very frustating. Now, it starts to be much better, more revs (up to 6000 rpm by peaks), smoother...

However, do not attempt to do the first service before 400 - 500 miles. Engine needs to get some wearing (= half synthetic oil). Anyway, your dealer will refuse to do it before this kind of mileage.

I hope we'll have some nice weather over this weekend.

All the Best.

Cheers,

Fab

What does it mean to lug the engine?

Lugging the engine is putting a load on the engine at low rpm. Basically, if you give it heavy throttle at very low rpm, you will hear the engine knocking. It's really bad for the engine in every-day use, but really really bad for the engine during breakin.
