Hi gang. Just wondering if the ugly heat shield on the stock cans is present on the TORs?
And the better question: If so, how do the cans look with it removed?
I don't like it, and since I won't carry passengers ever on that bike, I'd like to remove them, as well as the passenger pegs, which seem to be bolted thru the bottom, and the holes appear to be all but invisible when removed. Am I right?
Thanks for your help.

Both shield and pegs can be easily removed. The holes for the pegs are not invisible, but aren't bad. One thing to think about is the pegs actually serve some purpose if you lay the bike down. Without them the cans/exhuast are vulnerable. That's why I put mine back on... Plus, I take my daughter for rides every now and then...

Hey Geof, good comment buddy. But do they stand a fall? I'd imagine they just snap off; have they been 'crash-tested' (ouch!)?
And how about the holes for the shields; do you just put the allen screws back on?
Thanks for your help.

The stock pipes (and I expect the TORS) have little brackets welded to them that the heat shields are bolted to. If you take off the heat shields the brackets stand out like dog's balls.

ELP,

They are fairly beefy. They would bend perhaps but I doubt they would tear off. The bolt that holds them is about 3 inches long. I would think in a big crash it would be luck of the draw, but in a little drop or something I would think they would serve the purpose.

I haven't taken my covers off, but I agree with the above. You'd want something on there unless you removed the shield hangers from the cans. Should be a pretty easy thing to do and I'm pretty sure the bracket base is on the inboard side of the can...

When you take the heat shields off, there are two big old brackets, and they do stand out like dogs balls!!! The shields clearly serve two purposes, to protect riders against heat, and to hide the dogs balls on your pipes!!! I have to disagree, they add a nice finishing touch what would be a normal looking pipe, and yes they are exactly the same on TORS.
As for the rear pegs, they probably would stand up to a spill, and they do look good, but I removed mine, and the holes are only visible if you are looking for them......?

So what's the consensus on the TOR's 'nipples' for the heat shields: are they WELDED to the sleeve, or SCREWED??
If they're welded, I'm probably going to pass on them. If they're screwed, can the screws that secure the shields be used on those holes instead?
Thanks.

JC,

They are either spot welded or rivited...

Actually... Just checked... they are welded right to the can. However, I don't think it would be hard to cut them off, grind the weld and polish out the can. If you were handy, or knew soeone that could do the polishing, that might look kewl...
