Pulled the speed trip out this a.m. checked the sight glass for oil level and was shocked to see it whited out. It cranked up and ran fine so I was hopeing it was just condensation. but after short trip it is still there. What kind of bill should I expect from dealer to replace the head gasket?? HELP :hammer:
Check for oil on the radiator cap or bubbling into the radiator reservoir; those are both signs of a blown head gasket. Does the bike continue to blow steam after the engine is warmed up? Just another sign.......................

I changed the oil, well first I warmed it up to operating temp, then cahnged it and saw very little if any white oil. So maybe it is condensation. I didnt have the energy to take off the tank cover and check the rad. cap. But I will try tomorrow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the replys! -Jon :hammer:

If you have a coolant leak and you try to "burn off the condensation", you're going to trash the engine. Pressure test the cooling system before you ruin a perfectly good scooter. My T509 had a coolant leak but it leaked to the outside. It wasn't that difficult to replace the head gasket (for me) and the bike is definitely worth it.

Hello All, I changed the oil several days ago and have ridden it several time now with no white stuff in the sight glass any more. I did check the rad. cap . It was clean. So, I guess it was condensation. I have been at the dealership looking at the new white one they have there. Honestly, I really like my t509. I have blacked out the frame and done some other cool stuff. Also, I like the 6" rear wheel and 190 tire. I like the new bikes also, but I just can't justify selling mine to get a new one yet. My wife does not ride or I would give it to her, and get a new one for ME, but I cant go with that. So, as long as I dont have any major problems..I'm keeping my 98' out of choice...That's for the guy that said," all of the trips before 05' were junk". Thanks for all the replys guys!!

Glad that worked out for you. Also glad to hear you're hanging on to it. I took a test ride on a demo '05 and it is a truely nice machine; like the T509 but better in every way. Still, the T509 is just as good as it ever was and that is pretty good. And I still like the body better than the later two incarnations. I've riden several model years of the Speed Triple (it's nice to have a really good dealer in town) and I like them all (motorcycle ****?) but the T509 suits me. The forum would suggest it's a pile of $h1t, but you couldn't prove it by me. Except for the coolant leak, it's been trouble free for 37,000 miles.
