Hello all!

All of you who have some aftermarket cans (Wolf, Staintune, Art etc.). Do you run with the stock ECU map or TORS map as the Power Commander is not available yet? The bike seems to run fairly rich as stock on upper rpm range. Has anyone dynoed it with free flowing cans with A/F curve? No signs of running lean or burned valves?

My new cans are 1 3/4" ID straight baffle absorbtion type.

hey HarriS,

I have the Staintune cans, and Staintune recommend using the stock tune. I have been using the stock tune since I fitted the pipes a couple of months ago, and I was very happy with how it ran, no popping or backfiring, crisp response, easy starting, and no problems at all.

A mechanic at my dealer talked me into loading the TORS map. He beleives that with straight through pipes the bike would be running lean and would be improved with the new map. So he loaded it (free). It runs OK but seems a bit rich, not as crisp and it is harder to start.

I am going to get it dynoed before I switch back to the original tune, then get it dynoed again, to compare the A/F ratios. My seat of the pants dyno tells me it is better with the original stock tune.

I spoke at length with the Staintune R&D guys and they ran their test bike on the dyno many times with different maps and found that it ran best with the stock tune. I expect to find the same.

ok I have the wolf, the dealer told me that since the wolf sounded like the off road can, the off toad tune would be ok. Before the tune, there was the usual character: popping on deceleration, and closing the throttle never felt like it was really closed.

After the tune I had some problem days - the bike would get into a mood where it would like to die on a closed throttle, was weak and clogged on low revs. Some soot around the tips.

The last riding day I had I let the bike idle until it was hot, and on that day it performed just fine over a 5 hour trip. No hint of a problem. Strong idle, strong at different speeds. btw, I also put in the noise "baffles" which are just a foot long tube with a 120 degree flange near the tip.

So right now I'd have to say the jury is still out.. was the ecu having trouble adapting? is it ok now? i don't ride often enough to find out (chilly weather).

Hey Legman, may I ask you if your motor backfired on decel BEFORE you put the pipes???
I'm thinking it didn't, and that's why it doesn't do it now either. Inquiring minds want to know.

Hey JC

With the stock pipes I had no popping or backfiring, and I think that is the same for everybody. It is only after fitting the TORS or other pipes, before remapping that the backfiring becomes an issue.

Cheers

no it isn't the same for everybody. At least, not this everybody. My S3 popped and gurgled off the throttle and engine braking with stock exhaust and stock mufflers.
I wouldn't say backfire. Have you heard a backfire from a car before? sounds like a gun going off. But lots of popping and burbling.
the off-road map doesn't do nearly as much, perhaps none at all, really.

Legman, the reason I asked is because the demo I rode backfired (really!).
There're different levels of backfiring. This wasn't the shotgun kind, like Harleys with straight pipes, but it was pretty bad, especially above 5K rpms. Maybe because it was trashed; who knows, but a stock bike shouldn't do that.

Maybe I should have said "almost" every body.

JC..... the bike you test rode would be the exception rather than the rule. When you pick up your new bike, if it is backfiring and popping, I would turn around and take it straight back, because that would not be acceptable.

However, after being on this site since May and reugurlarly following the experiences of many new owners, I believe that it is unlikely that you will have this sort of problem.

And I say shame on that dealer that lets people test ride a bike that has obvious faults.

As some of you may know, this is my second 05 S3 and both burbled on deceleration with stock mufflers. Not shotgun blasts but some snack, cracle and pop. Does not bother me though and I actually like it.

I test rode two S3's at Biktoberfest and neither had
any snap, crackel or pop. Both were too quiet. So if I
buy one i will need to fix that. But first I need to sell my
1968 BSA Lightning.
