One or maybe both of the front disks on my 04 S3 vibrate mostly when braking hard from 80+. Its very noticeable and decreases my confidence in using the brakes hard. I've checked the pads, calipers and everything else twice, and had my dealer check for warped disk - nothing.

The dealer said it was the floaters seizing up and to lubricate them. I tried this once which fixed it for a couple of weeks though I don't recall this happening on any other bike I've had.

Anyone had this happen or can suggest anything else to check? At 9,000 miles I'm perplexed and annoyed because it detracts from a great ride and reduces my confidence in riding the bike.

Would appreciate any help or advice

Instead of lubricating the connection points for the floating discs you can try and rotate each of the mounting staples (?) around to make sure they all move freely.

Put a bolt through the staple hole and tighten it up a bit (not too much, you do not want to squash the staple) with a nut on the other side. Now you can rotate the staple with a normal ratchet drive on the bolt.

Use the above method on all the individual staples until you can get them all rotating freely.

I am not technically minded but here in the UK if the bike is more than 3 years old it has to pass an MOT which checks the brakes, steering, tyres lights etc. What I am getting at is that my son experienced the same thing as you describe on his ZX6R and the MOT tester checked all the bike and
after a process of ellimination it would seem the Headrace race bearings need replacing. The vibration only appeared under heavy breaking. It may be worth checking.

Thanks for the replies, apologies for the time taken to review. Will look at these two suggestions & let you know how I get on.

9,000 miles?

Is there any 'cupping' on the front tire? Just a thought.

Marcus, did you come up with a fix for this problem. My brakes do the same thing when at high speed. I just checked the run-out and it is at .13mm which is just above the standard amount of.1 mm and way less than the limit of .3mm. I cleaned the discs and floaters last week when I was changing the fork oil and that didn't help. I guess I will pull the pads and clean them next incase thay have been contaminated.

It was the tire. The front has had some cupping for a long time and I finally completely wore it out today so I installed a new one. Now the brakes have absolutely no vibration at any speed.
