Has anyone opened up the airbox on the new model S3?? I would think that increasing air might increase bhp.

I've opened it up, and I've researched it quite a bit. The consensus is don't do it!

Airbox harmonics is a black art and changing things in there will probably cause more harm than good. Best case scenario you gain 1-2 BHP and destroy this engine's beautiful torque curve. Worst case you gain nothing and destroy this engine's beautiful torque curve.

Probable outcome: You destroy this engine's beautiful torque curve. :hammer:

Race filters (like K&N) are another misconception. Yes, they provide more airflow, but along with it goes more dirt. And here's the kicker: your stock engine DOESN'T need more air than the one provided by the stock paper filter, so why compromise your engine? And even if they provided more hp (maybe 1 or 2??); do you want to score your cylinder walls with dirt for an extra horse or two? Your call.
By the way, you don't need a specialized testing to verify that. First of all, just look at the things: you can see thru them. Second of all, just blow dirt thru both filters and see how much more gets thru the racing-type filter. And the mess it's to clean them up... plus the one inside your intake.

Just change your paper filter regularly, and you won't lose any power. Just my opinion gentlemen.

You make it sound like they do no filtering at all. Ever see an engine prematurely wear due to a k&n? I've put them on all my vehicles. I've got 130k on my explorer and it's had once since the 20k. My duc's had one since day 1. My ST since 10k. I think the paranoia behind them is unsubstantiated. Do they filter as well as a paper filter? Nope, but it's with in 90% to 95% of the paper filter and it's the only filter you'll ever buy.

zore, i agree with you. i have had them on everything i own, no problems.
i have a 74 Nova that i completely rebuilt, including the motor.
now i could have bought another S3 for the amount i have in the motor alone, and the only filter it has ever seen is a K&N + the top filter too...
see picture...
for what its worth...

I was just in Arizona visiting my son and we put K&N filters on his
NEW Toyota V-8 4x4 super SUV -also on his wife's VW Passat V-6
I have them on my Honda Accord , my Triumph T100 my Olds Wagon, and my grandsons Toyota truck(new V-6). Any body who says they do not work is a baloney babbler. My son says some of the guys at the base were badmouthing them saying they blow oil into the injection system and pass alot of dirt etc. My experience has been long term positive- like a lot of vehicles and a lot of miles in some severe conditions -clean em and they will work well. They are great and you do not have to buy any more filters! All my vehicles (4 wheelers) go over 150,000 miles and all have had K&N with no problems or engine wear=(Mobil 1 synthetic oil) Good Product!!

I don't know if gauze/oil filters are good or bad, but information is always good...one of the independant studies on the air filter subject:
