Anyone know why its doing this??

Btw it does this only when its cold, ie mornings and when its been sitting for a few hours.
Also just popped in a shorai battery but it did it even with a normal battery.

Thats very odd, as you have changed the battery I have no idea. I would start by measuring the voltage at the starter just in case you have some bad / high resistance wiring.

The first turn starts to circulate oil, but the starter stops due to the voltage drop
The second try it will start as the oil has lubricated the bores and cams reducing the effort needed to start.

Are you allowing the fuel system to build up pressure (3 seconds after you turn the key on) before you try to start it?

yep i only start it after all sounds stop.

mine started doing this,when its cold try jump starting it and see if its ok, i put an extra earth from batt to subframe and never had it happen again untill i took the earth strap off when i sold it,i rode it to the dealers to trade it in and they started it it did the same thing again hope this helps,also we did check the electrics and found nothing wrong

Have you tried letting the lights stay on for 30 seconds or so more after the fuel pump primes?

I know here with our nights hovering above 0 Degrees Celsius and when I don't ride for a couple days it won't start the first time if I try to just after it primes.

However always on the second try.

Now referring to what I said about waiting 30 seconds with the lights on. If I do that it starts every single time regardless.

My 05 does the same thing. Getting better now that the weather is warming and I'm using the 18A Shorai.

Perhaps something to do with the fact that the Shorai doesn't rest at 100% charge and always finds its way back to 90%. I'm on my third Shorai (2x14's + the 18) and I've also done the 4 gauge starter mod.

I also have a cheap, near new Chinese battery (Besco CTX12-BS), that also suffers the same. However, if I remove the smaller Yuasa from the Bonneville, it'll start first attempt?

Dimlight,

Do you have aftermarket levers? If so, try adjusting it so it is at it's furthest setting.

Also, try turning your handlebars to the right before start up....you might have some twisting/pinching in the starter wire
