I went on about a 100 mile ride today. It was about 48 degrees out and rained about 75% of the time. Mostly highway. After longer stretches on the highway at 50-80 mph, when I would slow or stop for turns etc the bike would die unless I downshifted on decel or kept the revs up when the clutch was pulled in. It would start right back up but if I pulled in the clutch and didn't keep the RPM's up it, it would quit. The engine was running on the longer stretches between 3000 and 5000 RPMs. The water temp was around 170 to 175 degrees F. No engine warning light. I haven't ever encountered this problem before. Usually I down shift and let the engine slow me down however since it was raining and the road a was pretty slick I preferred to brake more. When I was back to city type riding (stop and go) no problems. It's not a good feeling riding in the rain and worrying about stopping and keeping the bike running.

It's an '03 that I bought new in March '05. It has about 3300 miles with a Jardine hi-mount exhaust and off-road tune. Only complaint I have about the tune is it pops a little more on decel more than I think it should. Any idea's? Thanks.

I haven't ever had a problem with gas tank vacuum, but it seems something worth looking into. I know that the some of the '05's were prone to this, anyone that has experienced it did it cause fuel starvation?

When did you get the exhaust? Did you take it to the dealer to have them remap the bike?

I had something similar happen, after I took the bike to the dealer, they installed new maps or something, and that stopped. Mine prob was similar, but at slow speeds. Commuting, i would stop at a red light, and the bike would shut down, sometimes when I pulled in the clutch it would do it.

Good luck

I put the pipe on about 2600 miles ago. I took it to the dealer to get the TOR map shortly thereafter.

I didn't notice that you have aftermarket exhaust.

For what it is worth, apart from my tank vacuum problem, which made it die on me constantly when the vacuum gew - I still have a slight dying problem even though the vacuum issue is gone.

I can't quite pin it down but *sometimes* it gets into a mood on closed throttle and slowing to a stop - usually, as you say, after highway run, where idle just does not kick in, it will die at that point unless I goose it - and even then it feels "weak" and will die if I load the drive train. So I have to ride the clutch a bit.

This is same as you - the TOR installed and aftermarket cat-less cans.

You mentioned the rain, does it happen in dry weather as well?

If my glitch does't clear up I might put back the factory cans, even though they are with-cat, and see what happens then.

Please post if you find out anything more.

InParkSlope, this was the only time I have experienced it. This was probably one the longer rides I have been on since getting this bike and the first time having it in the rain. Your description is exactly what I experienced however when I was back to city riding it didn't have any problems and there weren't any problems today either when riding around town. Though I did notice for the first time that on idle the headlights and speedo back lights dimmed on idle and would brighten with higher revs. I am used to this on my '70 Bonneville but haven't seen it with this one yet. I hooked up the battery charger and it said battery was topped off.

Hmm. Have you had the tank off lately, or done any other work? Sounds possibly like a kinked vent hose.

The Trophy can exhibit behavior like this too, due to a fuel line getting misrouted too close to the engine. The fuel basically boils in the hose causing a vapor lock.

skeepee -- I haven't had the tank off or done anything that would cause that but I think that might be something to look into. If the fuel line was too close to the engine I think that would of shown up when it was a lot hotter and the bike was running hotter. Thanks

Pig9r, I have the same problem as you, only mine happens more frequently than just after longer rides.

I'll be riding along, especially on a cold day, pull the clutch in to come from a stop, and instead of returning to idle, the motor just dies right there and then. It has no problems starting right back up, though. It's a bit unnerving, to say the least. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the FI, or maybe ignition system, although I put a brand new battery in it, thinking that would alleviate the problem, and it did not.
