Shorai says that you can use the typical lead acid battery charger if the desulfation mode can be turned off. In their FAQ, it says "We have confirmed with Deltran, makers of the "Battery Tender" brand, that their products do NOT have a desulfation mode, and are therefore OK for use with Shora LFX, for example." Then they go on to talk about their tender, etc.

I replaced my Deltran tender today at a local "Battery Plus" and they tried to sell me on another brand. I asked if it had the desulfation mode that can be turned off, etc. He asked what I am using and I tell him Shorai. The man goes on to say that a Deltran will ruin the Shorai and when I tell him that the manufacturer of the battery says it is OK, he says that the battery will hurt the charger.

So, I got the tender and then started to do some internet research where the consensus (from a view sites) is to NOT use a tender on the Lit Ion if you want to maximize life.

I haven't had any problems with mine but have any of you that use the Deltran have problems?

Night Train, why not just get the charger/tender available from Shorai? Thats what I got after I toasted mine using one of the smaller Shumacher charger/tenders..

Hey Joe, I would have at first if mine was not ok. I may look at it down the line. It's still more money and only meant for one type of battery.

Just adding another data point. My Shorai is about 2 years old now and still does the job.

When it's cool out (we don't really get cold here) it is slow to warm up and crank. At anything say 50 or below, if the bike has been sitting for a few days (and I regularly let it sit for a week or more without starting), I need to go through the routine of turning on the headlights for a few minutes to 'warm up' the battery. I'll usually turn them on while I pull on my helmet, glasses, gloves, etc, then give it a try. If it cranks slowly (typical) I'll wait another minute or two and try again. I have had to wait as long as perhaps 4-5 minutes, but I've never had it fail to start the bike. ('06 S3 1050). Once started, it'll crank the bike up immediately until left sitting overnight in cool conditions again.

Of note, my bike is particularly hard to start cold. Been that way for years. Even new AGM batteries are a crap-shoot starting it when the temps drop unless I leave them on the tender. I don't use the tender on the Shorai, and it always starts.

Russ you just beat me to the link of the Joel's videos.

I ran into these videos a few months back and had a quick email correspondence with Joel (the guy in the video). Needless to say he was not impressed with the Shorai, but in other videos of his he highly recommends the antigravity batteries (also LiFePo).

I was thinking of investing in Shorai but his reviews stoped me short. I got a Deka instead.

Right now I'm waiting to save up some for an antigravity battery but at the same time I'm holding out for A123 (yes even though bankrupt and selling off portions of the company) to deliver their neophosphate EX cells which solve the cold temp problem!

Once (if) the new EX cells make it to market, LiFePo, I think, will take off in the automotive and powersport battery market.

Keep in mind this is one guy with his test bench, but his methods seem sound and I think others could probably reproduce his results.

They're very comprehensive tests and this technology is compelling at least for us in the motorcycle world where the weight reduction is a significant percentage of vehicle. My interest was initially size as it enabled underseat install on a Thrux. Have 12 x A123 (26650 cells) which were assembled locally (had to sign a waiver) and a balancer as semi permanent. Doesn't get that cold here (Perth, Australia) maybe close to 0 degrees C on a winter morning but battery still kicks it.
If you wanted to go down the DIY road this looks like a good source for A123s
