Gang,

I plan to install heated grips, a "BMW plug" and a cig. lighter outlet (for gps) on my bike ('06 S3). I'd appreciate any guidance on where you installed switches and outlets near the instrument cluster and where you found a switched 12 volt wire.

Is the unused (# 10) fuse position switched? Guess I could check this but thought I'd ask first.

I have tried searching this site and find several people have done one or both of these mods but can not find details. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm interested too... got an '04 S3 and am in dire need of heated grips (and likely an outlet for a vest as well).

Anyone have any advice on good heated grips? Normally I would go with HotGrips but I don't want to have to install a resistor and in order to get the bar mounted mini-switch you have to order it with their grips from their website ($102 US). The Dual Star elements (goes under your existing grip) www.dual-star.com don't require a resistor and are inexpensive and I read a few good reviews online, however I would then need to find some method of mounting the switch on the bars--any suggestions?

Felix,

I have those on my '04. I ditched the switch that came with them and bought a two-position rocker switch. I used dual-sided tape to mount it to the top of the gauge panel, right above the row of idiot lights. Works great!

Wouldn't look good w/o a flyscreen though as the wires would be exposed.

I have the Dual Stars installed on my 01. I wired them with an inline blade style fuse and a relay from an auto parts store. The relay is to shut them off when the ignition is off. I spliced the relay coil wiring to a wire in the alarm jumper plug (comes on the bike ready to plug in Triumph alarm). This is to keep from killing the battery by accident.

I routed the wiring through black heat shrink then tied it along the existing bundles. Where it is most visible, I routed it through some black sleeving from some old turn signals to dress it up. I then put two layers of heat shrink over the toggle switch to add some support to the wiring and zip tied it to the wire bundle going into the left switch housing. It rests just below the turn signal switch and can be activated with my thumb in lighter gloves. If you have bar end mirrors, you can flip the back of the clutch mount and use the mirror boss as a mounting point for a switch bracket.

canyon chasers has a pretty good write up on installing snow mobile heated grips(like 35 bucks) on a duc. might check that out as it would be a cheaper(although more labor intensive) option.

I heard Triumph had a stock set for the sprint... I wonder if they would work?

I installed HotGrips on my wife's Suzuki SV650 and she is very pleased with them. In fact I'm the reason they now solder wires on the mini switch ';>

Doing the grips with this switch would not be difficult but was hoping someone had a good design for a dash panel so I could use the continuously adjustable control w/o a resistor and mount a power outlet for GPS.

Used the Triumph grips on my ST but they plug into the Sprint's harness - not an option on the S3 - and they are much more expensive. Also read on this list that the S3's bars are a bit smaller in diameter so the Triumph grips don't fit as well.

May go down and look at the bike and see if I can come up with any ideas - can't get it out as we are having our driveway paved and the contractor is pouring the second half today. Of course the weather is supposed to go from Great to lousy for the weekend!

FrankP; I read your article on the install of heated grips on your wife's SV somewhere when I googled HotGrips. Good job.

The Dual Star grip elements don't require a resistor. If you closely examine the wiring on the elements you will see that there are 2 separate pathways and 3 wires running to each element (2+, 1- ).

This eliminates the requirement of a resistor to consume the extra wattage when the low setting is used. I like the idea of this as it means I don't have to find a place to mount a resistor hidden from view.

Speedtriple13; rather than a relay to shut the circuit off wouldn't it have been easier to find a switched ignition power wire, tap it and in-line fuse it? I'm thinking that the headlight wire would work... good idea on the mirror mount as a spot to mount a switch.

Beers2U, no flyscreen and no intent of getting one. You meant 3 position switch, right? Or are your grip heaters on all the time...

I'm guessing you knew what I meant...

Technically, I believe it's called an On-Off-On rocker. I'll try to be more precise in the future.
