If memory serves, someone made a comment to the effect that carbon buildup on the exhaust ports is a rich condition.

I didn't wash mine for 3 weeks and it had a good bit of buildup on the exhaust right around the ports, spreading out about an inch all the way around. I cleaned it off with carburator cleaner. Is this an indicator of a rich condition, or is it normal because there is no little mouth on our exhausts?

TIA,
DwarF

When you burn hundreds of liters of gas, there is a chance that you get a small amout of soot in the process. It is completely normal.

What if you are burning gallons and not liters?

gallon is more than litre => more soot. Simple as that.

There is no way to completely get rid of soot. It is normal. Look in any exhaust pipe. If you don't like it, just clean it after every ride. It comes right off. Brake cleaner isn't nec. Then polish the rear of the can with a good SS polish and it will look like new...

If your PLUGS on the other hand look sootty, that is another story.

True, some is perfectly normal. If it seems to be an objectionable amount in a short time, though, there is a possibility of excessive richness. Next time yours is due to be in the shop, you might ask if they've got the fuel injection map that was updated this summer. My mechanic measured mine as being too rich and loaded the new map into my Triple about a month ago. I've had virtually no visible soot since then.
