Anybody racing a speed triple?

We have a racing series here in oz called BEARS Brirish European & American bikes. I have found a 07 S3 that is a statutory write off and I'm thinking about making a race bike out of it and competing in the above series, if economically feasible.
I was wondering if anyone else was doing something similar and if so any tips and advice would be appreciated

I don't race mine, but I've used it for 3 track days. My only input is that the stock rearsets will give you clearance issues and I found that it took a lot more effort riding the S3 on the track which resulted in slower lap times compared to my track bike (which is a 600). My suspension on the S3 was done by Race Tech, I had the gold valves and springs done for the forks and gold valve and Eibach spring for the shock.

The auction I was waiting for was put off to the end of the month, hopefully due to lack of interest...lol although that's just my wishful thinking.
So I'm waiting till then, the 06 one that I looked at was too badly damaged so I'm hoping the 07 model at the end of the month is not too expensive.
I've seen it from a distance and it looks to just have some cosmetic damage to the left hand side, it does have arrows high mounts and seems to have been looked after.

Oh I don't think it's bad, race bikes should be a bit wild looking. It just needs to be implemented somewhere else as well, perhaps some flame or tribal pattern of the same color on the tank sides. Perhaps something like this bike has, only using the right shade of blue? And if you decide it's horrible and repaint anyway, it's not like it would've cost much to try.

Race it.

I run mine at standing mile races and she does better then modern 600's. Fastest so far is 157. Brand new GSXR 600 and a CBR 600 were really struggling to break 150mph. I also run it at track days a few times a year, so far 7 total. I agree you can't turn a pig into a race horse, but you can make a damn fast pig. And, i bet you'll outrun plenty of other bikes. If your serious, get something else or expect to pay to make the S3 hustle. But, if you got the dough and determination, hot rod up that pig!
Here's mine. LSL clip-ons, Daytona nose fairing, peg risers i made in about 6 hours work and $20 worth of 6061. For some extra power, port the lip out of the throttle body, it's worth 22cfm of flow through the entire lift range.

Very nice, I'll definitely be doing the foot peg mod and the clip on's but want to retain the S3 look.
I'm not looking to win a championship or anything just be in the middle of the pack and having fun. If I improve then I'm sure the go faster bug will bite :D

Well seems my journey has begun. I managed to win this bike at auction for $2600, it is in much better condition than I first thought and has obviously been owned by someone who loves his S3 judging by the quality of the parts and the general condition.

It has
Arrow high mounts
Penske suspension front and rear
Renthal bars
Rizomo short levers
Heated grips
Cruise control
Non factory seat (can't remember brand)
Ventura rack
Pilot 2ct's {near new)

It needs
Radiator hoses on the left hand side
Radiator repaired or replaced (bent)
left fork leg has front mudgaurd bracket broken off

The tank and body work are in excellent condition as is the bike in general. I will be picking it up on Tuesday so I'll post some more photo's.

Update

Well I picked the bike up today and wasted no time in stripping unnecessary parts and checking the extent of the damage.
I've posted some photo's of my efforts today, I've taken the bike to Shock Treatment to have the suspension sorted and there was concern that the left fork leg was bent, but once removed it checked out ok. The biggest problem is the radiator and it's been sent for repair.
I love the tail tidy it had and will be putting that on my road bike, everything else like the rack, cruise control, handle bars, levers and heated grips will be going on ebay to help fund the project.
It seems to be a really good bike so let the fun begin I'll keep posting photo's and news of the new girls progress.

Can anyone tell me what the straps are for in pic 1, my 06 model does not have them.

I'm thinking of removing the airbox and just running the velocity stacks, is this feasible ie. would there be an advantage over just running a K&N air filter, or would the differences be negligible and possibly cause damage to my engine.

Back from holidays and keen to get back to my project. While I've been away the suspension has been modded by Shock Treatment and the radiator has been repaired.
I've got to get a new radiator hose, an R6 throttle tube, I've charged up the battery and I will more than likely swap the airbox off my road bike which has velocity stacks and then drill some holes to assist breathing.
So far I'm approaching my budget of 4k so I might have to slow down for a while, but a lot of the work is just labour intensive, so I can do all that myself.

Funds have delayed my progress, but I have finally found a 2nd hand radiator. So now I just have to fit some form of crankcase protection and fluid collection and I should be right to go. I'm disappointed I couldn't be ready for the last race of the season at Phillip Island but hopefully ready to go for t he new season next year

Well I finally found a radiator and installed it, looks a bit ratty but it pressure tested ok, had to clean all the green stuff out of the cooling system (only allowed to use water). The suspension is out of the bike and getting the racetech treatment.
I have drilled all the bolts and will wire them up, so things back on track.
What's left to do?
1. Engine case protection (probably R&G same as noobinacan has done)
2. Oil and air filter change, fresh oil.
3. Thinking of grafting some form of bikini fairing to flyscreen
4. Check tune and update if req'd, will look for some custom ones
5. Tyres and tyre warmers
6. Shorten bars
7. Rear sets (not sure which yet, but needs to use race pattern)
8. HM quickshifter
I also need to get some leathers.
