We have a racing series here in oz called BEARS Brirish European & American bikes. I have found a 07 S3 that is a statutory write off and I'm thinking about making a race bike out of it and competing in the above series, if economically feasible.
I was wondering if anyone else was doing something similar and if so any tips and advice would be appreciated
G'day al, fairing looks great and should make a big difference. Great video too, I'll see you at Mac Park easter weekend for round 1 of the Pirelli Nationals.
I used the TOD and it is the base map I used when it went to the dyno. I do run the 520 chain and sprockets, the advantage being they weigh less than the 530 and seem to wear very well.
What gearing are you running now? standard from memory is 18/42. I was running 18/45, then 19/43 and now 18/43.
Yes I got the standard 18/42, as I mentioned earlier with current TOD it seems has lost the bottom end torque, I'm not worried about the weight (I weight 73kg) doing the 18/45 it will me make accelerate faster, I guess for Mallala its more suited…..maybe for MacPark leave it standard????
Cheers
Al
I'd be very surprised if that's the case, TOD doesn't feel like it makes a noticeable increase in any one particular place but overall bike seems to rev cleaner and gets a torque increase.
Have your lap times changed after using TOD?
You are absolutely right, It's cleaner and gets torque increase. But I thought based on your experience with the gearing that 18/45 could give you faster exit corner. I know it depends on the track configuration…….
Lap time hasn't changed really…. depends!!!!
I'll see with the new tyres.
I didn't like the 18/45, yes it gets out of corners quicker but wants to wheel stand more and go light in the front. My lap times were faster with the 19/43 even at tracks like Broadford and Wakefield Park.
I took the bike to work today and this afternoon managed to fix up my trail problem by pushing the forks through the triple clamps by about 5mm. I had it on the rear stand but then hooked the front up with a sling and overhead crane, undid everything and just lifted the bike till I had the desired gap and then nipped it all up, had to stuff around with the clip ons but it's fine now.
I also had to drain and flush all the inhibitor out of the radiator fill it with nice fresh water bleed it and good to go. I gave it the once over and checked and tightened everything. So come saturday looking forward to getting back in to a new season.
I have my sights set on winning the club championship this year, and defend my place in the nationals, it's good to set goals.
So this weekend is the first round of the clubbies at Eastern Creek.
A great start to the season today, temp very hot but did manage to go faster than last year. It was unfortunate that I couldn't get there on the Friday for the track day due to work commitments, so qualifying and the first today was just about getting back into the groove.
Qualifying was a bit rusty last year my best time was a 1.14.5 so I was a little disappointed to qualify slower at 1.15.9 in 23rd out of 30 riders. The first race I finished 24th with a best time still slower than last year with a 1.14.9.
Race 2 was my best race of the day as far as position was concerned I finished 21st but my lap time was 1.14.0, so I was finally starting to go faster.
Race 3 I was pumped but the 2 guys in front of me got bad starts which balked me and cost me time so I was chasing the whole way. I had some interesting dices with a 675 Daytona, a Panigale and an Aprilia RSV. The Aprilia would get me on the straight and then brake really early into turn 1 which slowed me down. My lap time was actually 1/100th of a second faster. Anyway I finished 21st with a 1.13.9.
I will load the videos from races 1 and 3
Good day Rob,
Great video, good result too, who is the maniac at 1.51? The Eastern Creek track looks magnificent, maybe one day I'll take a trip up there……….
This is my last acquisition the Starlane Stealth GPS lap timer, I can analyse the data from the track to see braking and acceleration points I can also overlying video in the analysis screen to see exactly what I'm doing……that's the idea…
Wow that looks flash, I'm over the translogic I'm going to sell them both. I might look at one of these.
It was one of the F1 guys who must have stalled on the start or who started at the back. There were a couple of guys on S100RR's and Aprilias that were literally going ballistic down the straight but braking way to early for turn 1, obviously not this guy.
Well it was a different story on the Sunday, we were using the GP circuit which I love. As hard as I tried and how fast I thought I was going, I was 1.5 secs off my time from last Oct. I don't know why I was definitely faster in certain parts of the track from last year but obviously much slower in the rest. I had adjusted my front preload up by 1 1/2 turns to help on the north circuit and it worked but it was a totally different story on the GP circuit, in turn 1 it was great but sh#t everywhere else. In discussion with others it was suggested that to much front preload will cause the front to push wide, so I wound a full turn off and it immediately felt better. Initially the suspension was great but wheel and rear spring changes have upset the apple cart and while I've tried a lot of different settings I need expert help, so back to Shock Treatment.
The gearbox is getting much worse as far as missed gears go, so before the next race at Easter I need to get my suspension sorted and my gearbox fixed.
My gopro played up again and didn't record the first race but I'll post up the other 2 as soon as I get them on youtube. I always have a stuff up that I like to post up and it was in R3, I had just got past a Ducati on the outside in Turn 1 and I must have been congratulating myself instead of concentrating when I sailed right past my breaking marker. I jumped on the brakes and the rear wheel came up and the rear of the bike came around but I managed to stay on the bitumen but lost my position so I set off in pursuit, I did manage to catch and pass him 2 laps later and went on to finish 2.5 secs ahead, sadly that was the highlight of my day. It's a shame the gopro quit just as I was getting close.
It's still the best fun in the world even when things don't go your way.
wow, thanks for all the videos friend. i'm turning 59 next wk and just resumed riding last aug after 36 yrs off. put 1500 miles so far on 012 s3r. .. man, I really enjoyed going round the tracks via your gopro...and while its still a dream for me to do a race season, I think at this time l might only be able to try a track day here and there...but thanksalot for the thread I really enjoy it!! also have one question: can a bone stock 2012 S3r still be enjoyed on a track day w/o a fly screen or would the buffeting be too much on the back stretch? thanks and keep finishing!!

Glad you enjoy it, I think your S12R would be great as a track bike. There is a bit of buffeting and drag but it doesn't lessen the fun factor. I've had my flyscreen off and on and to be honest didn't really notice that much of a difference. Oh and your never to old have fun.
Well I have bitten the bullet and dropped the bike off at the shop to sort out the gearbox. I was recommended this mechanic by other racers as a great mechanic who doesn't rip you off. Well see, but he seems pretty switched on thinking it my be more in the selection side which would mean he may not have to split the cases. Fingers crossed.
I think it had about 30k on it before 2 full seasons of racing, so maybe a bit tired, I'm actually been looking at a HP2 sport as a possible replacement.
Have you put that clutch in yet? what do you think?
