I haven't picked up the bike yet, but was wondering if the fly screen is easy enough to remove to make it something I could put on for long trips and remove other times.

It's pretty easy to remove. You just have to back out 4 screws and then replace the backing plate for the guage cluster.

The only two problems I could see you having are:

1) Since the '04s come with the flyscreen attached, it won't have the original guage cluster backing on the pod. You might be able to find one from somebody with an '02 or '03 that has installed a fly screen.

2) I would worry that after a while of taking on/taking off, that the plastic threads would eventually get stripped.

Best advice would be to remove the fly screen as soon as you pick up the bike (if you really don't want it). You'll never miss it once you start riding and get used to the added wind blast...
