Well it's a lovely autumn's day here in Chester and I was really looking forwards to the ride into work today. Pulled the bike out of the garage, turned the ignition on - listened to the injectors prime, pulled in the clutch & pressed the start button and nothing but a sparking sound, then the display & lights go off.

Turned the ignition off and back on suspecting that the battery had maybe gone flat, but the lights come on & display works as usual. Tried hi beam/inidators just to check and everything seems fine. Hit the start button and same sparking sound but no sign of a turn from the motor.

Put the bike in gear and pushed forward to make sure nothing is seized then tried for the 3rd time - same result except this time when I turn the ignition off and back on there is nothing, zilch. Guess the main fuse has eventually decided it had taken enough...

There is a bit of background here as a couple of months back I was taken off by a couple of d*ckheads in a white van and the bike needed a lot of work (mostly cosmetic) to the right hand side to put it right. I've only used it once in the meantime a couple of weeks back when all seemed fine, but I guess the wiring could have come loose/snagged on that ride??

Any ideas anyone?

Well your starter solenoid could have jammed. Did you actually see the blown fuse or are you just assuming? To be honest I havent picked my triple up yet as I am still out of the country...but if you know where the starter is try tapping on the side of it while trying to crank it(just bump it dont lay on the starter). I have fought many a starter.

Hi - thanks for your prompt response. I assumed the fuse had gone as nothing lights up when I turn the ignition on - no idiot lights/headlights/injectors priming etc... To be honest I didn't have time to check as I had to strip my gear off and jump in the tin box to get to work.

If the starter was jammed wouldn't it still try to turn to engine over? The more I think about it I'm guessing that the wiring to the starter motor has come adrift and is earthing on the frame somewhere, hence the sparking sound, but no movement..??

Well if the solenoid sticks the starter wont kick out and will not be able to spin. This will pull a lot more amps. Assuming a triumph starter works like just about ever other vehicular starter that is. Another possibility is a loose battery cable...either at the battery side or at the other end. If there is some corrosion sometimes once a large amount of juice is pulled through it you will have to clean the burnt area first before you will get very much power again. Try cleaning the battery connections off. This is very simple and might save you some heart ache. Other than that get your test light out ).
