I USE A PASSPORT 8500 AND WHILE IT IS FAIRLY LOUD, IT'S NOT LOUD ENOUGH WHEN WEARING EARPLUGS AT HIGHER SPEEDS.
I CALLED THE MFG. AND FOUND THEY HAVE AN AMPLIFIED SPEAKER (ABOUT A 2" CUBE) FOR $30 ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT IN THEIR SALES LITERATURE.
IT PLUGS INTO THE DETECTOR AND USES IT'S VOLUME CONTROL. IT ALSO REQUIRES A 12 VOLT HOOKUP.
HAD TO MAKE A MOUNTING BRACKET FOR IT BUT IT WORKS GREAT!

do they actually work? my police freind told me to save my money the state troopers have a special device to pick up the radar signal before it senses the police radar . when this hapen it puts the police radar in a pulse mode. and of course they won't work against lazer.

Did you run this post through that same amplifier?

from reading a couple of the radar testing articles they put out in car mags from time to time the police radar detector detectors could only pick up the super cheap radar detectors(not a passport 8500). on a semi related tangent radar detectors are becoming less useful as police switch to instant on radar which only fires briefly and without traffic in front of you is impossible to detect. i know here in virginia where radar detectors are illegal, the police have yet to switch over and are still on K band but north and south carolina troopers have switched over in my experience. As for the speaker, I believe someone makes a LED light you can put in your helmet(never really seen it so I have no idea where\how it mounts) to notify you of radar. I think this would be a more effective route on a motorcycle.

Gentlemen.

Here in Ontario, Canada the Police have a new generation Radar Detector, detector. It picks up ALL radar warning devices and Jammers. It works on all current and non-current Radar detectors. This is a fact, regardless of what any manufacturer claims.

so unless you can get on a track (pretty difficult for me here in NYC) how do you live with the speed limits ? seriously, how can you survive on a highway at 55mph ?
to me there is virtually no point in riding a bike at 55mph (or 75mph for that matter), then I might as well be in a car a listen to music or chat. Of course I am referring to real bikes, not trycicles like those choppers thingies.

It is something that drives me crazy - that is why I miss so much being able to go and let it go on a track, but around here I guess there's nothing !

PS: I am from Italy where as you might know, speed limits are just signs, noone respects them - so I know what the difference here.

My Passport 8500 X50 has saved me countless times. They are passive devices, just pick up the radar signal and generate a tone. How can that be detected?

Littlefield,

I know it seems like all radar detectors do is just listen for the right frequency of radio waves from the radar guns. But they do emit their own electronic signatures.

In England, BBC is commercial-free because there's a charge for each TV set. So there are trucks that roam around sniffing out the electronic signature of TV's.

The computer monitor you're now looking at is sending out an electronic signature that the right equipment can listen to and know exactly what's on your screen. Check www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A4075463 for an interesting description of electronic spy measures and countermeasures.

States and countries that ban radar detectors can indeed detect them just by listening.

again this is just in my experience but I have a friend is an police officer for a county in VA(where detectors are illegal) and about a month after I got my passport 8500 he was issued a radar detector detector. since he knew I had one he asked if I wanted to try it out and I was sorta of curious as to the real top speed of my car at the time so we found a couple mile long deserted flat stretch and he set up on the side of the road. I have no idea what model it was but his detector detector couldn't pick up my passport on my pass and even when I pulled up right beside him. on a side note my bimmer clocked 137 in a 55 and I didn't even get a warning :lgh:

Here is where you can get info on the LED system for your helmet. They also have tremendous amount of info on Radar Detectors. I have an Escort 8500 and it has saved my ass countless times.
