Darkskies...

How much do you think the circumference changes at speed? Just curious. If it is significant, and this hugger was too close, I could see that scenario happening. But how much would the tire actually grow?

Everything was tight, I am very particular about that kind of thing, especially at the speeds we do. I don't want anything falling off as I throw it into a turn.
I had moved it so there was a good two inches clearance, I didn't want that bolt anywhere near my tire. Even when I tried to move it with my hand, as you did, it still wasn't that close to the tire, but I guess doing close to 100mph, on uneven roads, has a different effect on it.
It doesn't make any sense to me either, I am just putting it down to poor design and build quality. I think I have just been unlucky and got a ***** one, rather than you being lucky so far. I just got an email back from Fabproducts. he didn't have much to say, except that he would get in touch with other purchasers to see if they have had any issues. Not much help to me!!!
I have already taken the hugger off, so I can't supply pics of the install. I will try and get some of the tire.
Darkskies, it wasn't a bent piece of bolt, it was the bolt used to attach the hugger to the frame of the hugger. It holds the hugger in place, and I agree , using a different bolt, would have made much more sense to me. It did make me wonder when installing it, but apparently I learnt the hard way.

Well, I have no hard and fast figures to go on. That'd be something you'd need to ask the manufacturer. I do know that tyres can grow quite significantly on dragsters, funny bikes / cars etc. Obviously much less on a stock bike with smaller diameter tyres but if someone told me it was as much as 5mm at around 100 mph I wouldn't be surprised. And that means the diameter of the tyre would increase by 10mm - thereby taking away 10mm of clearance from the hugger. Even if the tyre is only thrown out by 2.5 mm that's still 5mm less clearance - doesn't sound much - unless your static clearance is only 4mm.

I've never fitted a hugger but I'm assuming there's some flex because they're usually glass fibre and therefore have a bit of give. Hit a pothole hard and it'll vibrate some - depending on how secure the fastening system is. A hard jolt could easily account for a millimetre or so of flex. All that has to be factored in when working out the clearance between the tyre and the nearest point of contact.

Darkskies, we're not talking 1 cm here. My hugger is about 1.5-2 inches above the tire. The bolt in question is in a steel plate. The hugger on a friends full race bike is about 1.5 cm about the tire, so they can't grow too much...

At least the tire growth is unlikely the issue here. I'm still baffled...
