I've only got 100 miles on this S3 so far and it is all low speed urban stuff. I've noticed it is increasingly rough when cold. "cold" hardly describes ambient temps of 70 degrees, but it takes a couple of coughs to start then if i goose the throttle a bit, or immediately glide off, it will stall.
For about 5 minutes it is lumpy and there is the smell of unburned hydrocarbons from the tailpipe..
Growing pains or get the dealer to fix this along with the klonking from the head?

Klonking from the head?!? That can't be right.

My only suggestion would be to get a better map and tuning. Its too bad Tuneboy doesn't have software yet for the new 05+ ECU.

It should start running smoohter the more miles you have on it.

It should not be knocking from the head.

It will take about 4-5 kickovers, even after it breaks in, to start. I have no idea how to fix this from personal experience, but others are saying the new map helps. I will try the new map when I get my TORs after Christmas.

Is your "klonking from the head" the steerring/fork? Or, is it actually in the head of the motor? If it's the headstock, that is common and needs to be tightened. If it's internal...bad...

The start thing is just like mine. One fire up, die, then fires right up. No worries.

Except that could be rather embarrassing in a parking lot full of non-Triumph riders. Course, maybe you could sell them on the "character" thing. :-D

sorry i meant the klonk from the front-end (steering) tree, mentioned in another topic, where i was advised to get the dealer to tighten that up.
The engine sounds fine, except when it is cold, and then it sounds like it is missing/flooding.

Yeah, I have the same cold starting problem. It starts up okay (unlike some people have reported) but don't try to twist the throttle until it's idled for a minute. It'll die right quick.

After it's idled for 30 seconds to a minute it runs just fantastic. Never a hiccup.

It's done this since new and in all kinds of weather including HOT. I've had the new tune installed because of black deposits on the exhaust but it didn't make any difference. I have over 5000 miles on the thing and it's not getting any better.

Sigh.

Perhaps the new exhaust in my future and the Off Road tune will alleviate matters.

I have something similar... it starts and seems to be running ok, but just as I pull out from my parking space, it loses all power for a second, then kicks it back on. This is... um.. alarming, when one needs to make a brisk left turn from the parking space out into traffic. I've nearly dropped it when the power cuts off a couple times. Eep!

Argh,

Adjust your throttle to take out most if not all of the "play" in the rotation. Cured ALL of my throttle woes...

I don't think throttle cable play is anything to do with the cold problem. I tightened up my cable and it is dialed in now, but that doesn't change how the engine runs in the first 5 minutes.

basically i have to leave it idling for at least 2 or 3 minutes then be very careful in the first 100m to avoid a sputter or to avoid too much throttle then finding the missing cylinder suddenly elects to join the party..

From cold take-offs are nearly impossible. The engine just dies under any load.
