I'm anxiously pacing around, waiting for my new baby to arrive (05 S3) and have found a couple of things to wonder about.. The bike will be limited to 100hp according to French law - is it easy to get the missing 30 back? Just a remap or new bloody cams? Once she is run in I will probably want new cans (and a remap) - are the factory off-road cans the favourite option? Anybody recommend a flyscreen?

Thanks
TF

Sorry to hear that they require crippling your bike over there. I'd imagine a new map might "fix" the issue- it seems like putting a limited map in would be the easiest way for the manufacturer to limit the bike to 100 hp.

It does seem like people do like the Triumph Off Road Silencers- especially if you like the look of the stock silencers. I'm thinking about getting a set and a remap next spring. (have to save up some $$)

As far as I know it is capped by a simple plate in the throttle shaft preventing the butterflies fully opening. Should unbolt in few minutes.

If you get found out > 100bhp your insurance will be invalid.

You probably know this already though mate.

Thanks, guys, I hope it is that simple.
Regarding insurance, the thinking goes like this: For anyone to need to check the power output of the bike, the shunt will have to have been a pretty big mess and I probably won't be around to worry about it.
Is that logical? How could I tonk around on a bike with 30 horsepower held back?

Wow! I'm sorry to hear of the 100hp law in France... Do they not allow bikes over 100hp at all? Or does it have to do with the rider's skill, or time riding motorcycles?

My apologies, I don't know how to circumvent the limiter thing, but I had to ask. Here in the US, dealers are happy to sell a 170hp bike to someone whose never ridden before.

I'd imagine that's only an issue if he tells them.

Here's a question for you - How do the French measure their BHP? is it at the crank or at the back wheel?..... If I saw 100 BHP at my back wheel with my standard UK spec bike i'd be very surprised........

As far as I know the Frenchies quote PS horsepower which is a kind of crank hp but not the same as the UK bhp. I assume the difference is due to running alternators or something??

It is illegal to ride a bike with French plates and over 100hp I am told. So you can ride a foreign unrestricted busa, but the manufacturers have all agreed to limit new bikes to 100hp. Dealers cannot go around telling people that they can derestrict new bikes, but some very raised eyebrows led me to believe that it would be possible - I was wondering about the price, but it sounds simple.

I'm certainly not going to tell the insurers as they would not insure me (and probably tell the Gendarmerie).

In France the legal BHP is the on taken on the wheel, and indeed by law all bikes are limited to 100 bhp. A fair number of riders have their bike freed of the bhp limiter being it electronical (just a matter of cutting a wire or redirecting it depending on the manufacturer) or mechanical.

As harriS stated for the S3 it is mechanical and preventing the buterfly to fully open...easily done by any mechanic.

Now the problem is

1) if you get caught by the cops (limited number of bhp tester...maybe 1 or 2 in the whole country)...your in for trouble ie : illegal vehicule and a) your insurance is not valid it is just as if you were driving without insurance, and b) if you hold a french driving licence it is as if you drive witout license...it s pretty sserious offenses here....but the chances of getting caught that way are nil

2) you get into an accident and your bike is inspected by an expert for insurance claim...if you are found out you lose your insurance (not valid for the specs you insured your vehicule)...hence no claim but the worse is that you'll have a real hard time to find someone ready to insure you...the chances of getting caught that way are slim but they exist.

lots of ppl play the game here and hope of not getting caught...I don't know of a single person who got caught either way...but there is a risk, is it worth it ? it's for you to judge.
