I recently acquired, a 95 speed triple on ebay. Unfortunately the seller could not locate the owners manual. I went to the dealer and he tells me that I can only use synthetic in my triumph and refused to sell me anything else. 65 dollars later i leave with 4 liters and a filter. Am I a jackass? or did he speak the truth? :???:
I have always run synthetic oil in my bikes, but everybody has their own opinion on it (which I am sure they will express shortly!!!!!). For me I say why skimp on something like oil. Although, $65 does seem a little pricey. I paid somewhere around $45 for the triumph recommended Mobil 1 for my bike when I did my 6,000 mile service last month. Used an out of state dealer to purchase my parts from, since there is no dealer close to me that I can trust in any way!!! Still came out ahead even with shipping................ :hammer:
and i thought the $40 i was paying for a tub of Silkolene [made by Fuchs, an English manufacturer] recommended from my stealership was pricy.
i always use synthetic in my cars and bikes. the only exception being using SAE during the break in period, where the lack of friction from synthetic takes away from removing metal flakes out of your engine.
I'm sorry to tell you this buddy, but you got hosed.
Mobil 1 High Performance (red cap) synthetic is pretty much the same oil as the Triumph recommended Mobil oil (which has a special Triumph part number and little else.) It's available at any Auto Parts Supply house for half the price.
Triumph oil filters are a wast of money too. Look for Purolator number L14476. Works great and costs 1/3 the money. It's the same filter as a Mazda MX5 (Miata) and others so it's widely available
The Triumph owners manual itself says you can use a blended synthetic/natural oil as long as it meets API SH or higher standards and JASO MA standards. Virtually all synthetic and blended synthetic oils meet this standard.

One reason the factory so strongly recommends synthetic or semi-synthetic (and the JASO MA rating) is because the engine oil is also your transmission lubricant. This is harder service than the oil would receive in engine use alone.
Of course, as others have pointed out, that doesn't mean it has to be the Triumph branded version.
Thanks for the replies. Usually I'm not this clueless. I do have one more question, though. I' ve owned Jap bikes that used the engine oil to lube the trans. All of a sudden you need a synthetic to do this?
As far as I am aware all of the Japanese manufacturers recommend fully synthetic oil in their modern sportsbike motors after the break in period. I know that Kawasaki definately do.
My last sportbike was a 92 ninja zx11. I guess Ive got a lot of catching up to do!!!!!!
