I swear my bike just gets home sick!!!!

ok First - My 04 speed triple like to screw with me some times
second - It likes going back to the dealer to visit its old friends apparently.

Its bone stock other than droping one tooth upfront.

I had a problem with the bike backfiring alot.

never under acceleration allways at idle or decel even just barely engine braking at 10 mph.

brought it to the dealer and it runs fine no problems. it sat at idle for 10 mins with me and the service guy standing there and did not hicup once.

I went down the road and nothing was wrong, came back advised them it had stopped for what ever reason.

I left and got maybe 5 miles away and it starts again. I went back and it hicups at every stoplight and no sh1t I get to the service door and it stops.

I leave again same thing. THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS AT THIS POINT.

I go back and ask that they reload the fuel map they do and its fine for a week. then starts again.

It now hicups in the dealers lot and the service guy takes it down the road. he concludes that the gas might be bad. we drain out the gas (only 1/4 of a tank) and replace it with gas he had in the shop. it stops. I leave and top off at the BP next door.

5 miles later it starts again. I called him up and told him whats happening he advised to try a lower octane fuel, so I used the rest of that tank (PS 161miles the idiot light comes on 179 it stalls) I rode around my block for 10 miles to insure all old gas was out of the tank. (and I was curios as to the exact range of the bike)I Put 89 in it and the back fires stop. but now at 3000-4000rpm it pings a little like a rattleing noise. I asked him about it and he said that this might be because of lower octane fuel or some thing might have worked its way lose. I checked every thing and all is tight. it only happens under load at 3000-4000rpm. He said that other daytona owners had stated that that engine makes that noise around that area of the rev range. Im not sure if thats true or not

Has any one had similar problems? any suggestions? :???:

any help is appriciated.

Thanks
Tom

I had a similar problem. When I had the stock can on, it was running perfectly for the first 3000 miles or so. After that, it started backfiring in the same manner that you described. Sometimes it did, sometimes it didn't. Unlike you, though, I have always used the recommended 89 octane. I have since put an aftermarket pipe on, with the stock tune intact, and it behaves the same way. Hey - it's a Triumph.

My '02 did stuff just like that, and worse, all the time. It really drove me nuts. No real rhyme or reason to it. I don't own it anymore. I sometimes wonder if the new owner gets the same treatment from the bike or if it was just me? :-D

I've got an 03 Speed Triple with the Hi mount Triumph Can and she started backfiring and surging a few days ago since out weather got rather chilly this early in the season, about 45 or so. I tried the lower octane 89, since I normally run the premium stuff and it's not backfiring as bad or any surging for that matter. I do know the Triumph tune richens the mixture and I just went over 10k miles so maybe the computer had a hiccup or something. I e-mailed my dealer but haven't gotten any replies but so far with the mid grade 89 fuel she seems to like it better, now if only winter wasn't getting so close since I can almost afford to fill her, cost me 12.50 today at the local MOBIL. Good thing bear season is this weekend so I have an excuse to NOT ride the bike for a day.

Hey dudes!... The pinging i would definitely put down to the lower octane fuel... The hiccuping and misfiring - Read the numerous posts concerning water in the spark plug wells and go check yours out............ :hammer:

if it is pinging you NEED a higher octane gas not a lower!!!
the "pinging" is what is called detonation! you need higher octane! do not let this go for very long!
