So, ticked 550 today (and a new "high score"- 101)... anyway, time to get the nasty break in oil out and put in the Mobil. Any tips/suggestions? Looks pretty straight forward.

What tool to use for the removal of the oil filter? Is there room for a standard filter tool? Or maybe a rubber strap wrench? Any ideas would be most welcome...

Also, would it be a big deal to exceed 600+ miles before a dealer shake down to go over the bike?

Thanks guys...

I picked up a claw filter removal tool that goes on a 3/8 socket and has 3 arms that get tighter as they turn. It will remove the most stuck on filter. I use a regular filter wrench to tighten the new one. The 600 mile checkup is mostly to change the oil, and to check all the fasteners. I did mine.

Everybody is going to think I'm insane, but I NEVER use any kind of filter wrench when installing an oil filter. If you are using a wrench then it's probably too tight.

No, I've never had a filter leak either. And I was a heavy equipment mechanic for years. Usually I can get the filters off without a wrench too. Because the Speed Triple has the filter recessed pretty far it's often hard to do this though. A wrench comes in handy.

You can get a 3/8 drive socket specifically the right size for the Triumph filter at any auto parts store. Just tell them it's for a Mazda Miata. Same filter, actually. Costs about $3.

Good luck and congratulations on buying the best bike in the world.

I don't think you're crazy. I worked in an automotive shop when I was in college, and every filter manufacturer would tell us to hand tighten the oil filter, as it will be too tight if you use a wrench.

I bought one of those too. It didn't remove my filter rather it scraped off all of the paint as it spun around. I think the dealer torqued my filter to about 500,000 ft-lbs at the 600 mile service. I bought a filter wrench (size 1) and I torque it to the factory spec.

You can pick up a filter wrench at the auto parts store. The closest size I could find was just a little large so I wrap some masking tape around the filter. Mine is a size 'F', the size 1 may work better. Take your filter with you and try it.

At least you are looking before you start. I did not and had to use the screwdriver pounded through the filter method to remove the factory installed filter.

I will say however that the 05 S3 happens to work really well for the screwdriver through the filter method as it offers plenty of room.

Well, got it done. Man did that oil look nasty!! I went with a K&N filter and Mobil 1 MX4t. The motor seems to like this new oil so far!!

Thanks for the info...
