has anyone had any difficulties with their sprag clutch? the local shop and triumph tech support seem to think that my hard hot starting difficulties are due to a faulty sprag clutch. how hard is this thing to replace? they are telling me that they have to split the engine open to fix it...eek! anyone else have these problems? or is the sprag clutch a relatively easy fix?

I thought this problem was only on the old 885 engines......

In the mean time keep yer battery well charged by using a battery tender, clean&tighten all the relevant terminals, earth at alternator and at battery. But out of interest what year and mileage S3 do you have and what are the symptoms exactly that you're experiencing - is your bike garage kept even? :hammer:

it is a 2002 S3 with 5500 miles. always garage kept. have a battery tender and i use it...to describe my symptoms: bike will not hot start. the engine doesnt turn over fast enough to start. the voltage regulator/rectifier was replaced because it was not charging the battery while i was riding. the battery tested good. we thought that the voltage regulator rectifier was the culprit, but since we have replaced it, it still doesnt start while its hot. triumph tech support seems to think its the sprag clutch. i am feeling down. fooey!

The symptoms of a sprag clutch failing is a clacking sound at start up with an eventual complete failure for the engine to turn over. The clacking is the clue - sounds like maybe the battery is failing!? :-D
