I just had my 12000 mile service done and i am wondering how critical it is to check the valves with the engine cold ?? The reason i ask is that the shop who did mine had my bike a 8am and they were done/checked by 11am (no shims needed) ?? I thought they would leave them as the last job of the day (or at least do things like fork oil first) ?? Also, is there any way i can be sure things like the rear hub and swingarm have been lubed ?? I don't see any tell tale signs ??

A tell tale sign would be the NEW rear wheel axle nut on the bill. Usually, the rear wheel nut, which is torqued to 146Nm(!), is destroyed in the process of loosening it.
Another possibility is to ask them ;-) Or, if they didn't clean the overspill after re-fitting the wheel, to check your rims for signs of grease.

As for valve lash, it's ideal to check it when the engine is room temperature. When the engine is hot, the hotter exhaust valves will expand faster than the aluminum head giving a reading below the minimum "cold" spec.

Within 3 hours, I would expect the head and valves to be at.... or near the same temperature..... but not at room temperature. At this point, the aluminum would be expanded further than normal, while the steel valves would be expanded just slightly more than normal.................. Giving you more space between the camshaft and bucket.

If the lash was on the mid to high side of the spec, your probably ok. If there were a couple of exhaust on the minimum....... you might want them to recheck at room temperature or be sure to check the lash again in 6000 miles.
