Hi,

I just bought an 02 S3 and it has been remapped with a tuneboy tune. I am getting 36-38 mpg; this is normal right? What is the average gas mileage with stock bikes? I was thinking about remapping it to get better gas mileage, but from what I hear 36-38 is pretty good for these bikes.

My second question is about the front spring preload adjustment. I wanted to put the front fork preload adjustments back to the stock settings to see how that felt, but when I started screwing in the big adjusters, I got to 9 turns in from his setting and it didnt seem to be coming to the end (I was afraid to go any farther without consulting you experts). It should be only 5 turns out from all the way in right? His adjustment is at the second little mark on the adjusters. Any ideas? Thanks

The best mileage I have gotten was 48 mpg, and the worst 40 mpg.

On the preload go by the marks on the side of it. Five should be visible with the bottom line right at the top of the forks. Not sure how many turns to get you there but watch the marks. I have mine at 5.

Rebound is done by counting the number of turns from fully screwed in using the slotted adjuster. Same with compression as far as turns go but it is located toward the bottom of the forks. If you are wanting to return to factory settings make sure pre-load, rebound and damping are within spec for front and rebound and damping for back. Your owners manual will have the settings. You can always run by a dealer and have them set it up for your height/weight or preferences also.

My 01 has a 2BR can with Triumph race can FI mapping. The local shop tweaked the settings a bit for idle but other than that the bike is stock. I never see less than 40 mpg and during the work commute get closer to 45+ mpg.

You might want to check the gearing as well. I went down one tooth in the front and my mileage is about 36-42 depending on how I drive. Wheelies are apparently not that fuel efficient... Before the gearing change I was getting a bit better. As for range My light comes on anywhere between 3.5 and 3.8 U.S. gallons to fill back up.
