Please help troubleshooting starter prob

Hi - still spinning my brain trying to decipher my non-starting '03 Speedy.

I've removed the sprag clutch but really don't know what I'm looking for.

The symptoms in my case don't really sound like a bad sprag clutch. When I'm trying to start the bike, the starter just spins -there is no "clanking" sound - just smooth spinning. Occasionally the engine sounds like it's going to start but doesn't. The battery is new and fully charged.

Is there a simple way to tell if I need to replace idler gear(s) versus the sprag clutch?

I see two different idler gears, a sprag clutch and a spares kit (sprag and gear) on BikeBandit - not sure what I need.

I could really use a hand from some folks more knowledgeable than me! Help a brother out

If the meshing gears look good, pretty much has to be the sprag clutch (item 14) itself - from your description, sure sounds like it

So the lack of a "clanking" or otherwise metallic sound doesn't rule out a Sprag clutch problem?

If you can hear the motor spinning yet nothing is hooking up, I would have thought has to be the sprag, unless there are some obviously stripped gears
