Help! 955i speed triple relay identification

Hello all,

Looking for some help please.

Long story but the 7 relays under the seat on my speed triple have been removed completely i.e. relays removed from sockets and sockets (with wiring loom) removed from bike.

Now it is time to refit to the bike and I don't have a record of which relay fits in which socket. As the looms have been off the bike I do not even have a record of where each relay socket would normally be located on the bike.

I am basically left with 7 relays and 3 looms. 1 loom with 3 relay sockets attached and two other looms with 2 relay sockets attached each!

Can anyone offer any advice please as to how I can figure out which relay goes in which socket! I don't want to try random combinations in case there is a risk of doing any damage to the bike.

It is a 1998 speed triple 955i.

Thanks very much in advance.

My Number 1 rule is to Buy a Owners manual for any bike I buy! it cost a little but if you Mod or Plan to do your Own work on your bike It's a Must!

and From what you have Written it's Your best bet!

Only other option would be to get with a Fellow S3 owner and Study His Relay set up!

Study the Blades on the plugs/Relays Most of them will only go in One spot, I would think! the Flasher relay has Three blades and goes in that Plug-in closest to the left side of the bike then theres three Matching relays that go side by side Right there by the battery and theres two that go in the rear Together ,but by them selves meaning away from the others :~) see what i mean LOL Better buy the manual or take it to a Shop, it only take a few minutes to plug them in so it shouldn't cost a lot... Good luck :~)

Note: my relay location Info is per my 09 S3,Your 955i may be different ?

OH and Welcome to the Site :~)

Nothing beats doing your own work!

Welcome scut - please include your bike year/model in your profile - helps for instant ID
Location also helpful

Is it a 98 or a 955i ?
98 (model) is a T509 - 955 would be 99 (model)

This should be good for either model

Relay 1 Wires - LG/N - G/R - G/W
Relay 2 Wires - P/R - B - P - U/R
Relay 3 Wires - P/G - B - P - U/W
Relay 4 Wires - U/Y - B - U/Y - W/R
Relay 5 Wires - N/K - U/B - B/Y - u/W
Relay 6 Wires - G/R - P - B/P - P/W
Relay 7 Wires - P - P - Y/N - N/K

Essentially, 1 is 3 pin Turn Signal Relay, 2, 3 & 4 are 5 pin change-over relays, 5, 6 & 7 are 4 pin relays.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I now have the relays all connected back up.

For whatever reason my set up is different to the above.

Turn signal is 3 pin and obvious.

One 5 pin relay is obvious as I have only one relay socket which is wired to the centre connection. Not entirely sure what this relay does!

I was then left with 5 4 pin sockets.

I identified the cooling fan, main power and ECU by the wire colours and fitted the 3 off 01RA001 42A940010-71 relays I have.

This left the two headlight relays (identified by wire colours again) and fitted the 4RA 003 510 08 relays I have (different to above which quotes 520 08).

Bike now starts and run fine. Headlights seem to be working just fine as well.

Although interestingly I seem to be able to remove one of the headlight relays without affecting the operation of the lights at all - go figure!! Maybe I'm missing a subtle change in the switching when it's not fitted.

Anyway - all is now well and thanks for your help.

Although the headlight Hi & low relays are identified (& OEM spec'd) as the 5pin type, 4 pin relays would work fine in this slot as it is not a change-over application and N/C pin is not wired anyway.

If you remove both headlight relays, one of the two lights will be off in low & high (opposite light in each case) - if you remove the hi relay when it is on low beam you will see no effect (and same for low relay if on hi beam). Each light receives direct power for one beam & switched through relay for the other (opposite as to which filament is switched by relay for the other light)
That is for markets where the regulation required different light to be powered for hi & low selections - populating the relay slots of course means visually both lights are lit for both hi & low selections.

The one that is wired with the center pin (the N/C contact) is the headlight-cut-while-starting relay - while starter is engaged, removes power from headlights

Hoping to dear god i'm wrong here, but my 2001 955 seems to be missing relays 2 and 3!

Anyone got a pic of the layout for my model.

No, it's 5 & 6 that are 'missing' - they don't exist on your model.

Hi team!

I'm looking to supposedly replace my headlamp relay so both lights work (currently one works for low beam, the other for high beam)
The above diagram has 7 relays, mine has 2 - indicators and dash
I can't seem to find the headlamp relay - or at least it's not obvious!

Any ideas?

2003 955i

Yours is different DFA

You may or not have items 6 & 5 on your model (ignition relay & tip-over-switch)

But 1 & 2 would be the slots you need to populate to activate both lamps.
3 would be the 5-pin relay location that cuts the lights while starting.
