Never put anything on the face of your brake pads. That is, the side that contacts the brake rotor.

Brake squealing is caused by vibrations in the pad and can be cured by a number of different products. These are usually painted on the caliper side of the pad and left to dry before reassembly. Read your instructions.

A friend of mine had a Yamaha Seca II (Diversion in the UK) that was notorious for this. He tried everything but after a few days they would start squealing again.

Finally, we removed the pads and did the following: First we cut shims that matched the size and shape of the back of the pad. These were made out of Soda cans so are easy to find and work with. Next, we applied a layer of high temperature silicone RTV adhesive to the back of the pad and let it skin over. Finally, we assembled the pads and calipers with the shim between the piston and the silicone coated pad.

Lots of work, but it solved his problem. No more squeal! On an unrelated note, he went on to crash the thing six times in one year. Doh!

Hi Celt
Put a very small amount on the back of each pad ie over the metal backing plate. Only put it where the pistons contact the surface (you should be able to see slight marks on the plate made by the piston contact) and don't get any near the edges just in case it ends up on the pad fronts...
cheers Chris

i will give it a go at weekend as im going on a bit of jaunt with a vfr and a bmw gs on sunday after the wsb race 1 ends.

i tried that zip tie trick for the spongey feel and ***** down it worked. i even had to adjust the span adjuster to number 2.
i hope it lasts for a while and i'll see you at the next get together.

just one comment on the copperslip thing...I know everyone uses it even mechanics and garages world wide but, I was warned once by a brake guru friend of mine that the stuff can get through the seals damaging them and get into the brake fluid effecting that to. as always anything in excess is a bad thing......
and shims used in production by friction manufacturers are just a sandwich of rubber/steel/rubber so well done in making your own!
