05 S3 Problem starting up

Hi Folks,

I'm new to the forum (and Triumph) , so first of all Hi!

My 05 S3 has only 600 miles on it, and occasionally gives me a hard time starting up. Throttle/no throttle, cold/hot doesn't matter. Also, it sometimes falls on its face when I twist it while idling. It's rare, but something like "idle-idle-idle-(twist)Vroom!" becomes "idle-idle-idle-(twist)Sputter-Clank!", and then continues like all is normal. Just took it to service (Temple City), but there weren't any error codes, and without any error-codes they seemed as clueless as myself.

Wanted to see if there are any others out there with similar symptoms. Thanks!

PS. If you're in LA and have an excuse to ride, please share!

I have occasional trouble starting my '05 when the engine is hot and I have only stopped for a minute (eg. filling up or popping for a coffee). When cold it always fires right up. Mine never dies once it is running though.

You could also check that you are not having a vacuum in your petrol tank due to a stuck or mismounted tipover valve (the plastic bulge on one of the thin hoses hanging from the lower left-hand corner of the tank). You can check that the valve flows towards the tank by taking it out and blowing through it. It should also be mounted as close to vertical as possible as this is the only postition is works correcly on.

Of course if you are having the vacuum prob, you will also notice it as a stuck or hard to open gas cap if you run your tank close to empty.

Also, never touch the throttle when starting the bike, that will throw the fuel injection off. When the bike's ECM is energized it sets the throttle position and idle air intake zero positions. If you have the throttle open even slightly those readings will be off and cause the bike have a hard time finding idle once it starts up.
