When breaking in the bike you have to stay below 3000 rpm for the first 160 km if I'm not mistaken. This got me worried since first I thought I'd just hit the highway and go to a town about 80 kms from here and back, nice simple and quick. Then I realised that at 3000rpm the bike might not go fast enough for me to be going on any highway at all.
So what is the speed of a S3 at 3000rpm 6:th gear?

Ok.
A bit on the slow side but a lot better than what I feared.

Thanks.

As long as you're not holding the RPM at a constant point droning a brand new motor on and on, you'll be fine. Don't worry about the factory spec for breaking in the engine. Use it as a baseline.

What I did with my triple was used a LOT of engine braking and acceleration constantly varying the rev of the motor within the listed rev range, plus or minus a 1000, and my motor runs like a bat out of hell. I've been bouncing off the rev limiter since 4,000 miles (during wheelie practice mostly) with the way I broke my engine in and have 0 problems. The S3 was built to be a bulletproof powerplant. Don't baby it.

Yeah, I've kinda figured one or two visits above the limit every now and then won't be the end of the world.
I'll use common sence pretty much.

Good thought. Do watch that 3500 mark for the first hundred miles, though. After that, life becomes a lot easier and vastly more fun.

MrEd: Read this!
Several people (including myself) are following and recommending Motomans break-in procedure, this (run it hard) seems to be an widespread knowledge among people involved in motor-racing. Read it, search sporthoj.com for threads about break-in (inkörning) and make your own conclusion.

I read an interesting article in one of the UK bike magazines some time ago (T.W.O. possibly?). They were visiting the Aprilia factory, and one of the last checks they found the guys doing at the factory was a power check. These engines had Zero miles on them, yet they were warmed up and then 'ragged' to make sure they were producing the required horsepower! Aprilia then put a rev limiter on the bike which is unlocked in stages when the bike gets its first couple of services....Strange eh?..... :hammer:

Very strange.
From what I've been reading up on the last hour, I'd saay that generally the people advocating a hard breaking in period seem to have better arguments that the people that says "take it easy"

On the other hand the manufacturers themselves are in the second group. :???:
