Ok, I did a little bit of searching but am still new enough to this bike that I feel like I may need a little guidance as to what possibly could be the problem.
The bike:
1999 Speed Triple
13k miles
Slip-on exhaust
dynojet power commander
K&N air filter
Recent maintenance done within the last 1k miles:
Oil change with mobil 1 Racing 4t &filter
spark plugs
clean & re-oil air filter
The Scenario:
It's been a beautiful end of summer/beginning of fall here in south eastern Oh, so I've regularly taking the s3 into work and out on the weekends since the aforementioned maintenance was done, and it's been running perfectly. I should've known that something was going to happen, I was enjoying it too much!
Today I hopped on the triple and it started fine, was about halfway between home and work (about 10miles out) and suddenly after deceleration I went to give it gas and the rpms continued to drop with no response until I pulled the clutch in, came to a stop and the engine died. I thought it was odd, tried to start it back up, it started. I continued for about 500ft and it died again, this time I noticed that the temp gauge had spiked and it is now pegged.
At this point I was ready to try and limp it back home so I pulled in the clutch and tried to start it back up and got no response from the ignition switch. No clicking, no trying to start and not starting, nothing. At this point I began to inspect other parts of the bike. I noticed that none of the lights(head or tail lights) were coming on with the key in the ignition position, the temp gauge is still pinned in it's maximum location, weather the key is in or not and I was not hearing the fuel pump kick on with the turn of the key either.
What I could see happening was that the power commander was getting power when the key was turned and the oil light and check engine light would come on, as they normally would when the key is in the ignition position with the bike not running.
Checked the oil level, it's spot on. Radiator was warm but not overly hot and after just a minute or so of sitting, the radiator was cool enough to touch, so I am certain that it wasn't some kind of catastrophic damage like oil starvation or overheating.
I noticed from searching that some people were questioning weather the neutral light was on and at this moment I can't recall if it was or not.
Any ideas or leads that will help point me in the right direction? I am thinking that the temp gauge needle going from normal operating temperature to pinned in an instant is an good indicator of something, I just am not very familiar with this bike yet and I'm not sure what it could be!
And no, I didn't hit the kill switch!
From searching these are my current ideas:
Battery? (explains the lack of lights and starting)
Grounding issue with battery or starter?
Bad Clutch lever switch? (explains the lack of starting but not lack of lights)
Bad Kill switch?(would explian both, but I don't recall if the kill switch kills the head and taillights also?)
Sidestand switch?
The last post in this thread sounds surprisingly like what I experienced but I'm not sure which "sub-harness" is being referred to.
