Check it out: When you press the starter button your bike automatically turns off the lights. The last four bikes I've owned have done this. When you let off on the starter button the lights come back on.
The 3 to 5 seconds your lights are on before you hit the starter isn't going to drain enough from your battery to cause any problems. In any case, with a battery in good condition it shouldn't be an issue. Leave your light on for five minutes and your bike should still start.

Most bikes ive owned were like this. Turn on the key and the lights stay off until after the engine is started then they come on.

The only bikes I've ever owned that did this had kickstarters and ignitions that didn't require a battery. The reason behind this is that the headlight drains too much energy from the ignition/charging system for the bike to start if there is a dead battery. Even if the bike does have an electric starter.
