Hi Guys

Only had her 3 weeks, can someone give me a pointer regarding the tank range. 03 model with carbon end can and correct mapping, I am getting about 130 miles before the orange fuel light comes on, is this the norm?? What distance can I expect to get while fuel light is on before runnung out??
What grade of fuel is the best to put in for performance/best consumption etc, normal unleaded or Super unleaded??

Regards
Skyman

From the time my fuel light came on I managed to squeeze out 25 miles before I could gas up.

Ok, with really conservative 5k rpm 80mph riding I was able to get up to 165 miles before the fuel light even clicked on during my St. Louis trip. So, I think if you ride really conservatively you can expect up to as high as 45-50 miles per gallon with stock, or as I had, 18/45 sprocket combination with a new 530DID chain.

Otherwise, if you're wacking wheelies, screaming down the freeway, and just generally riding like a hooligan, you can expect as low as 35mpg, lol.

Even with the 17/45 sprocket combination, riding like a Mad Max bandit, I'm still getting around 120 miles before the light clicks on.

I second Kuhlka's review - on my Wyoming trip, at highway speeds of 80-90, I was pulling above 150 before I saw the light - when running passes, backroads, I was closer to the 120-140 range. Filling up when the light comes on takes about 3.5 gallons, leaving about 1 gallon leftover, so conceivably you might be able to touch the 200 mile mark on a single tank if you stretched it to its limit.

I'm about the same on my 04, 135 light comes on, then maybe another 25 before I'm ****ting in my pants trying to find a pump.

On my carefully run-in 04 bike I get between 140 and 150 before the light comes on, almost no matter how I ride the bike.

My 03 ,with 2200 miles, Ive had the fuel light come on twice, once at 135 with the other at 138. Each time it took 3.5 gallons to fill up. I use only premium, 92/93 octane, tried mid-grade, 89 octane and it seemed to tick, not too bad but noticable, and I ride conservativly aggressive, if that makes any sence.

The manual says 89 so I've switched to 89 since halfway through my St. Louis trip and haven't had any trouble yet. I haven't noticed any ticking above and beyond what hum and clicking she's made since purchase.

It looks to me as if my reserve light comes up pretty quickly. I manage to get as much as 12.5 to 13 litres (3.30 to 3.40) galons every time the reserve light comes on, and the ranges I get are from 90 miles (riding it pretty hard) to 120 miles (at the beginning of the break in). At everyday riding conditions (I use it to conmute daily) the standard range is about 110 km, and that is a little annoying to me because it is the same range I got with my previous VTR 1000F, which has a smaller tank (16 litres agains 18 in the S3). All of this brings me to think that the fuel reserve in the tank is muuuch higher in the S3 than in the VTR.
I don't know if I manage to fill the tank completely up to its full capacity, but considering that I'm able to, if all the fuel I can use before the light goes on is 13 l, it means there are about 5 litres left in the tank. This means that almost 30% of the total capacity is reserve. That's quite a lot!!
I'm assuming that Triumph is on the conservative side because I've read in the owner's manual that running out of gas can damage the catalisators. That's the main reason why I don't want to test which is the maximum range I can get out of a tank. But I must admit that I'm a little bit disappointed with the mile range because I'm getting the same than I got with the VTR and I had assumed it would be longer due to the S3 higher tank capacity (2 l more).
Anyway, a minor fault for the greatest bike I've ridden so far.

Take care, folks!
