is the triple just a noisey engine? I hear all kinds of rattling, tapping and sounds like a pinball is loose in the engine. it seemed pretty tight when I first got it now it's fully broken in. I haven't had any other problems that most are having on thier 05 triples(feel sorry for ya) I hope mine doesn't inherrit any of those infact i am going to inspect the engine case now for leaks.

That's hard to say. All Triumph triple engines have a bit more clatter than most other bikes, which makes it hard to say just from a verbal description of the sounds which ones are harmless and which may be a sign of something serious. The "pinball" description doesn't sound good, but it may mean something different to you than it would to me. It should be checked in person by someone who knows what to listen for.

Not sure where you get the idea "most" are having problems on their Speed Triples, though? Remember, nearly everybody with a question or problem will find a forum to ask about it. Not that many folks without problems are going to just up and spontaneously announce "everything's still fine" unless prompted. That's just how it works.

Mine's noisy. All sorts of whines and taps. I started hearing one that's got me a little concerned though--sounds like value clatter due to low octane gas--sort of. It's hard to hear over wind noise and doesn't happen near idle. It doesn't seem to track engine rpm.

Need to take it to someone who has an ear for such things. You should probably do the same.

I have something that sounds like that. Barely noticeable at 500 miles became quite loud after first oil service and is slowly going. Now at 1700 miles...

I'm not sure my S3 is a benchmark as it is a 2000 model. However, one reason I was attracted to the S3 was its noisy nature. I wanted a bike that had the sounds I've always equated with high-end exotic sports cars. (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, etc.) I've read the early model S3s were quite clattery. Subsequent models were supposed to be quieter. The current 1050 engine is, from what I've read in the press, the quietest S3 yet.

Maybe this is a discussion of relative factors? I find my 2000 S3 is quieter as the miles pile on. (But then again, I've just recently switched to wearing ear plugs as a way to preserve what hearing I have left.) I believe my S3 runs smoother now, after 9K miles, than it did new.

I am pretty sure it's just the way it is. I won't be concerned unless it gets really loud I don't think it will. my 02 ninja drove me nuts with taps then found on message boards all ninjas had noisey engines. I am looking into louder exhaust I am like the blueflames the best so far but waiting for mr. akrapovic to make one. that should mute any pinging noises and sunocco around jersey atleast doesn't have 94 octane anymore(whats with that?) have to say it's the baddest streetrod/sportbiuke I ever had thank god I bought one I almost bought the ducati monster s4r

I've convinced myself that the noise I'm hearing is in fact valve clatter. Next fill up is with 93 octane. We'll see...

Hi Guys

Its my first time on the forum, so "Hi Dudes". I have an 03 955 Speed Triple with 10k on clock, sounds good on tickover, and great up the rev range, but between 1500 and 2000, mine clatters from the clutch housing area , changes a little dependant on temp etc, I took it to 3X Triumph dealer and the Cheif Mech listened to it etc and said quote" I've heard new ones clatter louder than that, nothing to worry about, all Speed triples are noisy.its the return on the clutch" The Clutch assembly has something to do with it apparently, and they have added something to it on the new 1050 Triple. So he informed me. They plugged diagnostic tester in to put my mind at ease and all was good(Just bought it 2nd hand ). Thanks to 3X Verwood as he did it in his lunch hour at no charge, good on you dude. If in doubt, take it to a dealer and get them to have a listen.

Regards
Skymannull

The best way to describe the sound I hear is that it's like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle. I only hear that at low speeds however, which is.........well..........very rarely!!
