3,000 Mile Maintenance Report
Hi All,
I just crossed 3,000 miles on a 2009 Speed Triple that I purchase in late March. I've had a few minor maintenance issues that I thought I'd share. Perhaps this is typical for this type of bike. I've only owned one other motorcycle, which I sold at 12,000 miles, after owning it 1.5 years. It was a 2007 Vulcan 900 Custom. The only issue I had with it was one lost bolt off the foot peg.
First, let me say that I absolutely love my Speed Triple.
As previously stated, I bought the bike in late March and had the first service in April. After the first service, I had the following issues, in order.
- The positive battery terminal came loose.
- I lost a bolt off the radiator shroud.
- The radiator clamp on the upper hose came loose and it spewed coolant down the right side of the bike.
- I had to add 300ml of oil to top the oil off at 3,000.
- The bolt that holds the kickstand stop had almost completely backed out.
I was surprised that they didn't catch some of these things at the first service. I talked to a service guy today and he said that they only touch the major bolts.
Is this to be expected? Anyone else had similar maintenance experiences?
Thanks,
David

my 2010 speed triple se had a few issues. my issues were: fuel tank vent blocked somewhere, hard starting after sitting more than 6 hours, intermittant coolant leak. there were some other things but i think it was just me being paranoid.
at my first service i told the dealer about all of this, they couldnt verify any of my complaints, but.... everything except the fuel tank vent issue has eather fixed it self or the dealer did and didnt bother to tell me.
my last bike(2003 buell xb9r) pissed oil, fouled plugs constantly, wouldnt idle when cold. everyone says they are easy to maintain, i guess i got a friday afternoon bike then. i expected perfection with this s3 but i guess nothing is perfect.

Things do have a habit of working loose on new vehicles, Buy yourself a torque wrench and take a few hour's on a Saturday to go round and do an inspection of the bike, these are high performance machines and should be treated as such.

i agree, we have to check our bikes every now and then but these things shouldnt happen on a bike of this price and quality.

These all sound like basic maintenance items. We should all be checking these and additional items per the owner's manual. The Japanese companies spoiled us rotten. Once upon a time, bikes and cars required constant inspection and maintenance just like airplanes.

Mine had a loose cam cover bolt and cam ladder not torqued properly in the factory. Picked up at the 20,000km service after water had been getting into the engine. Very very lucky damage was minimal.
Other than that, all was mint!

No issues here. I wonder how the dealer didn't catch this stuff before they turned it over to you, and at the first service appointment.

i bought my Speed Triple at exactly the same time and mine has also just crossed the 3,000 mile barrier. First i have to say i absolutely love the bike it really is the business and just about to treat myself to a tuneboy.:-)
the only problem i have had is funnily enough a missing bolt from the rad shroud. Oh and a rear puncture which cost me a new tyre im glad of the post as i will check my bike over thoroughly tomorrow morning and re-post if i find anything else.
thnx
