2005 vs 2007 Speed triple help me decide!

Hey guys.
I am a long term ZX-9 crotch rocketer who has decided to convert to hooliganism.
After a bunch of reading and carefully weighing options, I HEARD the Speed 3. Decision made!

So i am trying to decide what year is the best bet.
I have a chance to buy a really nice 2005 but I am not sure about the engine management issues. slow to start, throttle response etc. I have read that I can upgrade the brake caliper if it gives me trouble so no problem.
These things always get over hyped on the net so I thought I would ask the experts.

2005,6,7???

Any input?
Thanks a ton in advance

Congratulations a hard choice to make as the 1050 is a great motor in all it's forms. Personally I'd go with the latest model I could afford/get a good deal on.

Triumph continually make minor enhancements like ECU upgrades, seat design etc which are not necessarily worth a fortune are worthwhile upgrades. The ECU was in 07 I think and the seat in 08. If you're going to do lots of farkles, then the seat may be less of a problem i.e. Sargent or Corbin etc.

Possibly if you're going to change the exhausts, then an ECU remap may also be all you need.

If you are going to mod the bike, then don't worry about the age too much, try for an 06 onwards. If you're going to leave it standard, then definitely get the latest/youngest you can afford.

Just my 2c worth.

I agree with ruscook! Get the latest model you can afford.

I have an 05 with all the issues, but they've been addressed at my expense.

I would prefer an 06 or 07 but there is a great deal on an 05 that has been babied. It has 1500 miles on it original. Bought new in 07 from the dealer, one owner and it is cheap.
I am planning an exhaust and remap to suit it. As I understand, the gsxr front brake will be around $500 so it's doable.
What issues did you have to sort, and how much did it cost you to sort them?
Thanks
Sam

Well I guess if the price is really good and you are prepared to do the GSXR mod, then go for it.
I just purchased some 07 calipers for $75US and they seem ok. Also, stock mirrors are rubbish and something you'll want to change. The seat I found terrible and replaced with a Sargent, which is much better.
Suspension I need to address, but that can wait for more funds.

Great bike either way!

Thanks for the quick reply.

So have you had any issues with the ECU? Quirky throttle response or otherwise. I suppose cranking for a few seconds is a relatively minor annoyance I can live with. The ECU really the only "mod" I am concerned about. Anything else I can work on I guess.

Ferris,
I see you are running a tuneboy, exhaust and K&N. I will be doing the same soon after I get my grubby mits on one of these machines. With the 05 ECU, after you piped and tuned it, are you happy with the results? I guess that is the bottom line. If it works well with all the after market gear I will be happy as I WILL be adding a pipe and tuning it.
Cheers
S

No real issues with the ECU at all!

Had a couple of issues with mods, but nothing major. Engine warning light when K&N was first installed and error codes logged. Light went out as soon as engine was cycled off and on again.
I've had my bike custom tuned and find it fantastic now. I was a little disappointed with some of the fuel maps available and found them a tad flat in the mid-range. Now I have smooth grunt everywhere at the expense of economy. I can live with that lol.

I do plan to swap my K&N for a PiperCross filter in the near future.

I dont no what all th bull dust is about the brakes??
Read http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/model_eval...lvltnglong.pdf
And can anyone explaine what makes a Brembo any better than anything else.Hydraulics is only maths and leverage. The smaller the master cylinder pushing on the greater (dia) slave cylinder(caliper) the more pressure at the job (disc) .doesnt matter what brand stamped on the component.Bit like wine tasting if you pay alot you think it is good.I bet no one could tell what brakes you were using if you couldnt see the brand name. The back brake doesnt even work on the speed tripple so why worry about the front? If youre ridding for the power then stopping shouldnt be an issue, like the mirror issue , who cares whos behind you!!

Good to hear guys.

This is a great forum. Thanks to everyone for the input!
I had a look and the bike is in great shape but did have a very low speed lowside. I am weighing out the price vs other machines in the market. It got a new set of pegs and the brake lever. Crank cover BARELY marked and a minor scuff on the rad shield. Looks quite solid but I have to weigh the price of whatever else is available.
Now the fun begins!
