Hey all - in light of the '05 redesign I recently made myself a sweet deal on an '04 in Roulette Green. This has long been my dream bike, and while I appreciate the advancement the S3 has seen this year I'm ecstatic to be on the olde skool model!

I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I'm wondering what the consensus is for an aftermarket high-pipe. Specifically I'm curious about Triumph's own can, as it seems to be the nicest-looking option. In light of the '05 makeover I feel I'd better act fast lest Triumph quit making cans to fit my bike.

I primarily want something that looks nice and won't fall apart in 3 year's time. I'd also like to hear the triple sing a bit more, but not something obnoxiously loud (as D&Ds have a reputation for). I expect to lose a little weight and a marginal power gain from any option but these really aren't priorities for me.

Thanks, and a pointer to an old, overlooked thread is as appreciated as a fresh response!

I have a Jardine hi-mount and like it very much. I wish it was a bit quieter, but it's not obnoxious. It definately has a very throaty sound when you get the engine anything over 3k.

Glad to see another S3 rider in WA! Where's Cedar Falls?

Also - there's nothing Old Skool about this bike!

You're right - this topic has been beat to death, but just to bring you up to speed, most guys go with the Triumph hi-mount carbon fiber can (including me - I just installed mine a couple weeks ago), but some guys like the Two Bros. can or even the Leo Vince.

Each can has its own quirks, but everyone agrees that the bike sounds much better than stock! The Triumph can has a nice deep burble at idle and absolutely rips in the higher rpms!

The Triumph can has good build quality and Triumph has designed a tune (you're dealer can download it) to work specifically with their can (so it runs smooooth!). If you ever ride w/ a passenger, SkyKing makes a spacer kit that lets you keep your passenger footpegs with the Triumph can. The only drawback I've heard about Triumph's can is that you can't re-pack it.

From what I know, the Two Bros can tucks up a little higher, but I don't think you can keep the passener pegs. Also, the can is a bit longer, so you have to get rear turnsignals w/ shorter stalks. You can re-pack the Two Bros can.

I'm sure alot of other guys will weigh in w/ their opinions too!

Have fun on that bike! It's the best!

I just got the Triumph hi mount carbon can on my 2003 a few weeks ago. It definitely looks like the right can for the bike. They should have come from the factory with that can. The sound is somewhat louder cruising, definitely throatier at idle, and really rips when you hop on it.

I was fortunate enough to get before and after dyno runs when the pipe was installed. The correct Triumph tune was also loaded into the computer. It added no peak horsepower or torque, and actually lost a little HP around 6000 rpm. I was surprised. However, it did fill in a low spot in the torque curve between 3 and 4 grand. The mechanic tweaked with the throttle position sensor to trick the computer into running a little richer and brought the torque up about 7 ft-lbs between 2 and 3 grand. You could probably do better using a tuneboy and lots of dyno time.

The point is, don't expect a big gain in power from the Triumph can. I've heard the Wolf can is supposed to net you 7 peak HP, but I don't know for sure. But for looks and fit I think the Triumph can wins overall. Of course, YMMV.

Jer..

PS - on the pipe I got it was not necessary to install spacers to reattach the passenger foot peg. I just ordered longer bolts from McMaster-Carr and bolted it back on. Apparently there was a redesign in the pipe mounting bracket.

The Wolf sounds really deep and you can keep the passenger pegs on the ne whigh level - the 7 bhp gain is on the 05 - on the earlier model it's more like 8 bhp at peak and 12 bhp in the mid range !!

Thanks for all the great replies! Another thing I meant to ask about was foot room. I had a Ducati Supersport with high pipes and I had to work to keep my heels off of 'em. Kinda annoying.

Busted :-D Cedar Falls no longer exists. It was a town near North Bend (where I really live) that flooded when the Tolt reservoir was built. It's under what is now Rattlesnake Lake - during a good hot summer the lake will dry out, and you can see the foundations of some of the old buildings.
