Can I flip the '05 S3 tank up just by removing the front end screw even if the tank is full?

Or will the breather hose start to piss fuel?

Anything else to watch out for when removing the tank (hoses getting pinched etc.)?

You will need to release the two side panel screws too.

I just went through this tonight. Several things to watch out for.

1) Don't do what I did: Remove the left side panel completely. It's not that hard and will make putting the breather tubes back on a lot easier. Be sure to remove the front and middle screws from both sides and pull out the plastic screws on the lower parts.

2) Be careful not to kink or crush the breather tubes in any way during reassembly. Remember that the coolant overflow tube passes between the two breather ports.

3) I found that on mine the tank would not just pivot backwards on the rear mount. I'm not sure why. I had to remove the bolt completely and slide the tank back a couple of centimeters. I'll be having it off again here in a few days and I'll try to figure out what went wrong.

4) The fuel line pops right off and will only leak a few drops. Good design here.

5) The electrical connection was much more difficult to remove. I was worried about breaking a connection. However, it did finally come off.

Once the tank is off it's a matter of removing a zillion screws to access the air filter. No real problem.

The fresh air ports on the airbox seem really restrictive so I think an airbox modification is in order. However, due to space constraints I'm not sure exactly how to go about this. Unless it's opened up somehow a K&N air-filter isn't going to help much.

Then of course, there's the plenum chamber for the turbo charger... How am I going to fit that in there? :hammer: :hammer: :hammer:

crashmasterd, thanks for a very detailed post. I may have to think this over again as the whole point of my excercise is just to gain access to the front blinker connectors.

On your pics it seems that they are under the airbox so I would have to remove that also and as I don't really have a proper garage I am a bit hesitant about disassembling half the bike in the car park.

Somehow I thought by the looks of the tank that one could just unscrew the front and pivot it up on the rear bolt like it was on a hinge. Oh well, I can always disassemble the blinkers and unsolder the cable on that end.

I see a couple of us has made it this far (Great pics by the way)

I stumbled when I started to remove the lower air box.

What is attached to the lower airbox?
I didn't get as far as the intake manifold clamps, and the 2 screws at the seat end of the box, doesn't free it up much at all.

I would like to take some slack out of the throddle cable and the airbox is in the way!

I was also thinking of changing out the front blinkers....I'm thinking seriously of doing it all at once and get it over with!

You can also disassemble just the blinkers and pull the wire through the plastic stalk as the blinker wires have nice standard connectors on the blinker end.

I ended changing my blinkers this way as the connectors on the wire end were pretty much impossible to access.

I didn't try to remove the airbox because this was only exploratory surgery prior to some wiring I plan to do. It looks like a bear to me and I hope I never have to do it. However, I'm pretty sure I will considering an airbox mod is in my future.

Thanks for the advice on the turn signal wires Martin. This is another project that I wasn't looking forward to.

Here's a chuckle: A guy I race with was looking at it the other night and actually asked me if the front turn signals were factory. He thought they were so cool that they couldn't possibly have been designed to be mounted there!
