don't get me wrong...it fires but it takes 4 or 5 times when the bike hasn't been ridden. i've had the new exhaust and the remapping done which are the only modifications. if i stop for a moment after its warmed it, it fires on the first touch. just curious if anyone else has the same characteristics or if this is normal. thanks for the response in advance...

Mine starts on the first try at the starter even when cold, but the engine does turn over quite a bit before firing up.

Mine is a bit cranky (proper expression?) as well, takes about 4-5 rotations before starting (when cold). I experienced the same behaviour with my -98 900 Tiger (carb). When the engine is warm it starts at the first rotation.

That's something many of us wouldn't know, as the work was done by the dealer before we took delivery.

Ephtriple, is yours the stock exhaust and map?

I've been curious myself whether this is an issue with the re-map. Like Brian, I find it takes several tries unless the engine is already warm from running. The only thing that doesn't totally thrill me about this bike is the prospect of wearing out the starter prematurely from all the excess cranking.

Same thing here. When warm it starts instantly but the colder it is the longer I have to crank before it fires up. Maybe five seconds at 5 C.

I think he's saying it cranks 4 or 5 times before it starts when cold, not that he has to try it 4 or 5 times. From what I've seen with the EFI system they use it's programmed in to allow the motor to build a little oil pressure before it lights off. It's based on the engine temp sensor. Below a certain temp the motor will crank a few times before it supplies power to the ignition circuit. Above a certain temp it lights up right away.

Mine is exactly like people have stated here. Cold it cranks about 5 times them fires up. It's normal IMHO.

When my race engine builder (boats) puts a motor in he has a ritual that he insists everyone use. When the motor is cold you pull the kill switch and crank the motor for 10 seconds or until you see oil pressure on the gauge. Then, and only then do you put the kill switch on and fire up the motor. His engines last a long time and win a lot of races......

I got the factory "off road" pipes from my dealer at delivery.
Lately, the engine takes quite a few cranks to fire up and sometimes won't on the first push.

It always fires on the second push of the starter button though.

I'm going to mention it to my dealer.

manual says to give it a little throttle @ cold start. On other bikes this is not good for the motor, but since the manual says it. The trick is to only give a tiny bit of gas or it lights up and keeps going.
