Looking at speed triples, what to expect?

Hey all

I currently ride a GSXR 750 and to be honest i have never really got along with it. I am looking for a bike with a bit more instant punch in the low/mid range. A more upright riding position would also be welcomed.

No too concered about handling traits as the roads here are pretty flat, i just find with the 750 i have to wind it out to get into the power and by that time i am already going well over the speed limit - not very practical on the street.

In terms of power what difference can i expect? I beleive the 1050 puts out similar hp numbers to the GSXR 750. I am more concered about power differences below 100 mph, for me thats where it counts.

Also is a major revision due for next year? Meaning a bad time to buy new?

Thanks for the help!

(note: i have considered the street triple, though have decided i prefer the speed for the the extra torque and power, im also 6" 2 tall, weigh 95kg's and occasionally pillion my gf.)

My opinion: The triple is definitely a more practical street bike and below 100mph is where its at its best. Its more of a "real world" bike, not a track monster, but is also more than enough bike for the average track day junky.

My previous ride was an 03 R1, which was a great bike, but it really needed to be revved in order to reach the meaty part of the power curve. Just like your 750, high revs = speed limit broken (on my old R1). The S3 provides plenty of hooligan enjoyment but allows you to do it at more sensible speeds.

The R1 was also a little, um.....small. I'm 6'4" and 110kg and I find the S3 to be a good fit physically. I commute on it every day and hit the twisties on weekends and so far have nothing but praise for it.

Hope that helps

Everything he said. I went from a '99 R1 to my 955 with the same outcome.

Same here. 2002 R1 to a 2008 S3 with 1000 miles on it (I got to skip break in ) Very pleased with power, riding comfort and overall. I made a 550 mile ride from where I bought it with no problems. I would have never made it on the R1. I haven't had it up to the mountains yet, but it feels like it will dive into to the corners with the new Michelin Pilot Powers I just installed. I'm headed to the North Georgia mountains tomorrow to find out. In the few miles that I have ridden since I bought the bike (5/2/09) I have received more compliments than I received in the R1's lifetime. The S3 is def a looker.

I've had 2 GSXR 750s, and currently have both a 750 and a Speed Triple. The 750 was a great street bike for me. Perhaps you are just riding in too high of a gear? I've never had any power problems, but you can also re-gear the 750 to suit your needs. Go -1 +2 and it will feel faster than a Speed Triple in every way.

Yes, HP is nearly identical. My 1050 Speedy dyno'd at 125 hp stock and my modified 750 is at 129 (its an '05). You will appreciate the instant delivery of usable power provided by the Speed Triple, though. It is honestly not that much more comfortable if you're riding hard (which it seems you want to do based on your complaints).

Don't expect to see a Speed Triple upgrade for another year or 2.
