04 Speedometer problem

Well I have read all about guys having problems with there speedometers on the 955 S3 and it finally happened to me. It seems to be a little different from what I have read though. It is going crazy! I was cruising along ahead of traffic running, I would say about 65-70 mph but my speedo read 25mph. So I was lost, I started to decell and the speed went up as I sped up it went down. Shut the bike down and it started all over but know I am running about 60 and it reads 4 mph so I figured when I hit 10mph I was running at a good clip. So what could the problem be? I have read about a magnet sensor or something but cant find anything in my service manual about this part. Can someone please give me a little detail about this? Please help!!

Do you see a wire running from your front wheel to the ECU? Normally its either what you mentioned or the ECU needs an updated tune. The way you have mentioned it flaking out does not seem like ECU to me. (but I may be wrong)

I thought the ECU issue normally always was 0mph read out and sometimes 1-2mph

correct me if im wrong

A you shure the battery is in top condition ? A quick easy way to check the speedo yourself is to chuck the battery on a charger for a bit or swap it for a battery you know is good then try it again.

If you are happy enough to take the front wheel of you can do a visual check of the magnet, a dud one usualy comes out in several pieces.

If it is OK be very careful about putting the whole thing back together.

You can also check out the connector block on the right hand side of the bike hiding behind the frame below the fuel tank.

If they check out then it might be a trip to the dealer to check the tune.

Not sure about the battery but It starts with no problems but I will check it. It is all over the place though. Rather strange. So the magnet is in the spedo gear? I cant seem to find any wires running out of the front wheel but I will look again.

What looks like an ordinary speedo gearbox is a housing containing a tubular shaped magnet which is driven by the wheel in the normal way - a washer with couple of tabs on it attached to the front wheel.

The wiring from the magnet looks like a normal speedo cable exept there is no screwring attaching it to the housing.

On the right hand side of the bike you are looking for a connector block with a pink, orange and black/white wires.

This is not symptomatic of the ECM tune issue - don't waste any time or expense pursuing that as a potential
Sounds like broken magnet.
Expensive!
See the sticky thread for a cost-effective replacement option.

As suggested, pull front wheel, remove speed sender and inspect the rotating magnet. It is not available as an itemized replacement - entire sender must be replaced.

Good luck with that - since the price of a sender is double that.
Look it up yourself on BikeBandit - $175.
