has anyone with a new S3 been able to do a pure power wheelie in 2nd gear? i've been able to get the front end up for a bit using the ol' push the forks and let them rebound method but i'd much prefer a sit down wheelie and clutching it scares the bajesus out of me.

Could you tell me the difference between a power wheelie and a standard wheelie ?
But yes, I do wheelies in second gear and quite long ones by using the clutch :-)

a power wheelie is just rolling on the throttle until the front end comes up. a clutch wheelie is reving the throttle and letting the clutch pop which lifts the front end up. and the wheelies i can do in second gear involve standing on the rearsets jumping on the front forks to get them to compress, handfull of throttle, and when the forks rebound, the front end comes up. but, its a stand up wheelie.

It should be a trivial matter.

Leaving an intersection Monday, not pushing it hard because I'm still in break-in, I had the surprising sensation of the forks reaching the end of their travel and front-tread contact area suddenly diminishing... with plenty of throttle left! It was very distinctive, and it's a sensation I have studiously avoided on my other bikes, but it was quite comfortable on the S3.

That was in second gear--not right after shifting from first, but when I inadvertently gave it a little extra throttle just prior to reaching 6000 rpm, where I planned to shift to third.

It leaves no doubt in my mind that a pure wheelie in second is very do-able anywhere in the vicinity of peak torque.

Seems like it does not power wheelie in second. Very few bikes actually do. I rode a kawi 10R and it did. My Bandit had more power than the Triumph and it did not power wheelie in second very often. Occasionally did though.

My 3 (!) Aprilia RSV Milles did it easily, I already worried a bit on the S3 05, but I see its normal for this bike pfffffffff

I would like to see a torque figure of it, anyone has seen one yet?

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on Keith Code's "On One" wheelie school website that they'll teach you to do power wheelies in 2nd if you learn fast enough [they use '02-'04 S3's in their classes]. Check it out:

I've lifted my front in 2nd without the use of the clutch. Get the RPM about half way up and then twist the throttle about 3/4 and it should lift right up.

Not to jump in on an '05 discussion here but if my '03 can do
it, which by the way the feeling is just awesome, you should certainly be able to do it. It's one of those things that if you are willing to twist the grip and hang on... yeehaw!!! :-D
