hello all

i am new to the board...and street bikes for that matter.

i have been lurking awhile, and decided to join to get some feedback. i am looking at getting a used S3, and was wondering if there were any years that were particularly better than others, or if there were any significant differences. i guess i'm looking at a 97-04, but i'd get and early one if i found a nice deal.

i was reading another post about having a S3 as a first bike, and even though it may not be the wisest move, especially since i'm only 20, i think i can pull it off.

also, what do most insurance companies consider a S3, a "sport-bike", or a "standard" (i guess that is the term). because insurance on a "sport-bike" would be insanely high for a newly licensed rider.

thanks in advance

Is this your first bike ever? Or your first street bike? If you've never ridden before, do yourself a favor and get something smaller with a LOT less power. That way, the learning curve won't be straight up, and you can live to ride another day. And sign up for the NSF course asap! Best of luck!

Outlawd,

I'm 35 and live in rural NJ. My insurance costs me $700+/year. Rider Insurance (http://www.njrider.com/) was the cheapest I found. Other companies quoted me $1,200/year.

Regards,
Capt.

Well, '97 is pretty early. I'd hold out for at least 1999, when they went to the 955 engine. There were additional revisions and improvements in 2002. If you can manage one of the later versions, all the better for maintainability.

You're wise to be concerned about insurance. I'm an old geezer with no accidents. Even so, they're charging me twice for the S3 what they do for my standards like the Bonneville and the Tiger...the latter of which cost me exactly the same as the S3. Most companies (rightly) consider the Speed Triple a sport bike.
