My '03 S3 backfires pretty regularly on deceleration. i am accustomed to this sort of behavior w/fuel injected bikes but I'm wondering at what point should I consider it to be excessive? Are there other symptoms which indicate the need for some tuning?
I have the factory carbon high pipe...

Do you have the hi-mount tune downloaded from the dealer? That would probably balance it out a bit.

Mine has a nice burble and an occassional backfire on decelerating (I just installed the hi-mount, but haven't had the dealer install the tune yet), but I wouldn't call it excessive backfiring.

One other question: Does your gas cap hiss or have a lot of suction when you open it to fill up? I had this for a while (thought it was normal), but dealer found a kinked vacuum or breather line to a throttle body (can't remember which), so he balanced and re-synched the throttle bodies. It instantly ran better with no more backfiring...

I noticed that too w/ my gas cap. I've been taking the tank off and on recently for various reasons. Should I be concerned?

I have the Jardine hi-mount on my 04 and had little backfiring until I had the re-mapping done. Then it was really bad, not only was it popping and backfiring on deceleration but when ever the throttle was off. Took it back and had them re-install the stock mapping and not a probelm since.

I would chcek into getting it re-mapped since yours sounds like mine did after the change.
